for me it is Blair Witch and it is a weird reason why.

>family gathering
>cousin has double VHS with some extra documentary trying to prove everything
>he refuses to show me the movie
>3am and pop the movie in when everyone fell asleep
>nothing really happens but a wave of terror takes over
>had a hard time sleeping for the longest time because of it

Still think The Grifter takes it for sheer terror, but the other two build a ton of tension & maintain
>>
Yup, Blair Witch. I was 9 when it came out, and we lived just out of town, surrounded by woods that looked exactly like the ones in the movie.

The children laughing outside the tent and Josh screaming somewhere in the darkness still give me chills.
>>
Inland Empire isn't a fucking horror film, for the last time. You're the type of faggots that claim Requiem for a Dream and Enter the Void are horrors as well.

They aren't.

if we're basing this around marketing, id say this or JAWS, probably both for their respected times. Both hyped up audiences after not showing much promise in the start and becoming big (in JAWS's case the first) blockbuster
then all the fear and paranoia that followed. there hasnt been anything like that, at least not the that extent, Maybe some but nothing on that level or possibly ever again

I saw both in theaters
>>
The grudge. In the grudge universe, she'll just pop out of anywhere you aren't visually focused on. Even if it defies basic physical laws like grabbing you from within your own hoodie because the hood is up and there's like a inch of blackness behind your neck. It's stupid yeah, but 13 year old me got fucked up hardcore by those movies.

That, and the whole shunting scene is completely revolting, bordering on nauseating. Great film.
>>
>>70500791
yes yes yes. i love this movie. that twist ending was amazing. scared the shit out of me
>>
I literally just finished the shining which was great but probably not the scariest. Great direction and lighting but the scariness was atmosphere and music reliant. Not that that's bad.

The Witch was fucking great. It wasn't as technically intricate as the shining but it effected me just as muh if no more.

I remember thinking The Fly was terrifying. The fucking maggot baby, the wrist snap, the mucus acid, and the suicide. Crazy movie.

>>
>>70490393
Idk if they're the scariest, but these are the only ones I've seen that I actually think are good. Usually they'll be scary for a bit but ruin it by just being shitty movies so after you've seen it once it just becomes silly.

Blair Witch
Antichrist
The Shining
The Witch
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Rosemary's Baby

When I first saw it in theaters though, The Grudge scared the shit out of me. I'd have to watch it again to really know though.
>>
>>70504708
Fucking neck yourself.
>>
>>70498124
I thought it was kinda lame.

Never went anywhere interesting and just felt like a randumb weed movie.
>>
>>70505288
i agree the plot was a little spotty and scattered and i didn't know what to make of the ending, but the spooks were real. the way the ghosts move, and the unforgiving length of the spook shots, just really got me wound up and tense in the neck
>>
>>70505398
Not to mention the theme about death being an eternal loneliness that the ghosts are trying to escape.

And the fact that when the living learn that what awaits them in the afterlife is the same isolated perspective, they begin killing themselves en masse. Might as well get on with the eternity that awaits us all.

Depressing fucking movie.
>>
>>70505597
yeah it's the only movie i've ever paused just to take a break from the way it was making me feel. i know that sounds cheesy or whatever but fuck it, that bleak ass movie made a angsty faggot of me
>>
You guys should know, /x/ is not only for creepypasta.

Classics:
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
The Exorcist (1973)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
The Thing (1982)
Hellraiser (1987)
Poltergeist (1982)
Pet Sematary (1989)
Village of the Damned (1960)
Day of the Dead (1985)
The Shining (1980)
The Omen (1976)

You probably haven't seen:
Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005)
Prince of Darkness (1987)
Phantoms (1998)
Event Horizon (1997)
Vanishing on 7th Street (2010)
The Descent (2005)
Frozen (2010)
Night of the Creeps (1986)
[Rec] (2007)
The Mist (2007)
The Forest (2016)
The Amityville Horror (2005)
Lord of Illusions (1995)

Bonus, eerie films:
Donnie Darko (2001)
Coherence (2013)
Dark City (1998)
Sphere (1998)
Solaris (1972)
Stalker (1979)
Forbidden Planet (1956)

Having watched those, the Prince of Darkness is the kind of film is the scariest not because of scary jumps, but the fact that you are helpless to change anything is like a jump to the void. Can't beat the feeling.
>>
>>70506374
I was going to call you an utterly tasteless fag until that last part about Prince of Darkness being the best movie on there. Maybe not true but a bold and based opinion.

Without mentioning classics like the Shining, the best horror movie for me personally is A Tale of Two Sisters. It has a good story and is genuinely spooky.

Noroi, Session 9 and The Innkeepers are some very underrated horror films, they're way better than the likes of Insidious and similar dross.

Not sure about all time. Blair Witch as mentioned is/was pretty spooky.

Paranormal Activity scared me a bit.
I watched it the night I moved into an empty apartment. All I had was mattress on the floor in the living room and my laptop.

The atmosphere of a horror film can so easily be ruined. I remember I tried showing The Exorcist to my buddies as a kid. They made so much fucking fun of the film the experience was fucked.

Home invasion films are pretty scary to me, mainly cause that shit can happen.

This was the Blair Witch Project of my generation. Honestly thought this whole movie was real the first time I saw it. Didn't know how fucked up it was going to get (that makes it the scariest for me) or how far it will go because it seemed like no holds barred after the introductory autopsy scene.

Sure, it hasn't aged well at all but no horror film ever had a bigger, scarier intense effect on me than this film, although Cannibal Holocaust and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer come close.
>>
Personally Session 9 was probably one of the best horrors I've watched.
The Shining is also up there mostly because unlike most horror movies it seems just as disturbing if not even more disturbing every time I rewatch it.
