I'll play devils advocate for a second.
On one hand, Hermoine's "whiteness" isn't really a defining characteristic about her, and I believe this is what J.K. Rowling is getting at. Unlike the Weasley's red hair and freckly face coming up over and over in both descriptions and conversations, Hermione could very well be a black brit without changing much about her astuteness, smarts, and somewhat bossy attitude. A retcon here wouldn't be devistating.
Now, her saying that "I never said Hermione was white" is obviously bullshit, since we have illustrations and movies to somewhat cooborate it. Hermione 'able' to be black is one thing, Hermione 'always' having been possibly black is something entirely different. In the end its just J.K. pandering, so in all honestly that is what people should be diverting their criticism at. Its not that Hermione can't be black, Dumbledore gay or even Harry a muslim, its that she has the same revisionist attitude fans decried from George Lucas.
Now, those issues aside, here my problem with the entire idea of changing a character's race and the like. This all seems to be a part of the "Diversity" wave enveloping the entertainment industry at the moment, with biracial couples on tv, black men in talk shows, women in sports commentary, and all the mixed race/gay/trasngender/etc showing up everywhere. My problem with the racemixing in particular is that, while they may change a white character to being black, they aren't bringing any part of black culture with that character. Instead of making an African American Hermione, she is just a culturally white Hermione with a different color pallet. To point out the most horribly glaring contradiction in this entire liberal diversity movement, actions like the above are extremely damaging to real African Americans who have to deal with crime, poverty, drugs, abuse, and are STILL marginalized in society.

The books go into lots more detail. The films work as a standalone or an accompaniment. You do miss things youd like to know if you only saw the films. I would reccomend reading them if you want to know more they are kind of fast reads.

A good character is one who stands on his own. Someone we get to know intimately, whose flaws and blemishes we're aware of. They're haunting characters, no matter how different they might be from us.
If a person can only appreciate a book because they can replace themselves with the protagonist they are limiting themselves as readers and are missing out on a vast array of literature
I could go into detail about how the comforting determinism of good books plays a major part in their appeal and how people have a right to complain when people try to alter them( like that fucking new romeo and juliet show still triggered)
or how good books lead a life of their own and are a work of momentary genius or inspiration beyond the grasp of the author (for instance cervantes writing nothing but mediocrity for 50 years and then suddenly writing an absolute masterpiece seemingly out of nowhere).
or even combining those two ideas, how authors should never alter their work once it's published for whatever reason because it will ineluctably diminish its quality or destroy what genius was in the work.
