To be clear, Saving Private Ryan actually uses it sparingly and when it does, its to good effect. It emphasizes the chaotic moments but remains readable. I attribute this to the editing. For the action sequences the time between cuts is really long by today's standards and each cut to the next follows the direction of the action very well.
Still, I remember this being the dawn of shaky cam in mainstream. Shame it's really never been used well since.
