Once the Instrumentality fuck up is finished. Boy sees the real girl on the beach and hurts her on impulse believing that the girl that he perceived on his mind during instrumentality is how the girl really is.
Girl on the beach reaches for his warmth – shows him kindness - despite being hurt by boy.
In this case plainly referencing the hedgehog dilemma in which hedgehog A gets close for warmth to hedgehog B, without giving a shit about being hurt. Thus ending the dilemma.
Boy feels the sincere kindness and touch that he had so longed and breaks into tears over girl. Thus confirming to the girl that boy reciprocates her feelings.
Girl says: disgusting which could mean:
She is disgusted that she loves a guy like him.
She was aware of what boy said and did during the hospital scene and insulted him as he had asked her and also because she feels repulsed that he jerked to her.
In the end they finally manage to communicate with each other and the walls of frustrations that where been built during the show are gone, leaving them with a very promising note.

If you want to know what Anno was getting at rewatch episode 26 since it's about as candid as the man will ever get.
EoE is more of an experiment in how kino he could make a story about teenagers piloting bio-mechanical ultramen as a metaphor for his own personal experiences with depression.
If you want the actual plot that's not too hard. The whole series had been building up to instrumentality, or turning all of humanity into one consciousness. Humanity as a whole rather than human beings as islands. All the fighting was over how this would go down. SEELE, using the JSDF, wanted to control instrumentality as they saw human existence in its current state as a miserable mistake and hoped to transcend to a god-like state by directly controlling the process. Gendo wanted to control instrumentality as a means of reuniting with his sort-of-dead wife whose soul was inside Unit-01 all along. Rei and Kaworu were just tools needed to complete the process, and Gendo had all he needed to make it work when his tools turned on him. Rei decided that Gendo was kind of a selfish asshole so she left humanity's future in the hands of Shinji, who she considered kind and selfless. However since Shinji was so fucked up he decided that he was done with life and would rather reduce humanity to a sea of tang than keep going.
Then at the end he changes his mind and decides to stop being tang. Then Asuka does too. Then he chokes her because he has no idea what the fuck's going on or how he feels about anything. Then she touches his face and this small display of affection/intimacy/humanity is enough to completely ruin him so he starts sobbing like a bitch.

My problem with the series is that it spends too much energy on the psychology and philosophy and doesn't ever really flesh out the meat and potatoes sci-fi elements. I thought that the whole concept of these proto-god like beings scattered across the cosmos by some unknowably ancient alien race was really neat. The scope of it all and potential was awesome, but it's never explored and just sits in the trunk while we watch a story about an extremely whiny kid struggle with his place in the world while piloting a biomech.
It was just really underwhelming for me
Seele finally have the conditions to conduct The Human Instrumentality Project after having Nerv finish the last Angel, but with Gendo having put instrumentality in his own hands unbeknownst to Seele and with the help of Kaji, using the soul and body of Lilith and the embryo of Adam, Seele use the JIDF to invade Nerv and create an instrumentality by their own design originally planned, to devolve humanity into a singular consciousness free from the human misery in contrast with Gendos plan to reunite with his wife, Yui.
Meanwhile Shinji having a breakdown feels guilty for what has happened to all the people he had grown to love. Asuka was hospitalised, Rei had a new clone, Kowaru betrayed his friendship and Shinji was forced to kill him. All he could do was hide. The JSDF begin their operation and invade the Geofront, killing most of the staff. Before they manage to find Shinji, Katsuragi saves him and convinces him to go to Unit 01 and fight. She gives him a kiss for confidence. Prior to this Asuka was put inside and Unit 02 and sent them to the bottom of the lake to hide. Meanwhile Gendo and the Rei clone are in the room where Lilith is kept, ready to execute his plans for Instrumentality, but is interrupted by Ritsuko threatening to murder him, but is killed in by Rei.
Gendo fuses his hand with the Adam embryo and attempts to fuse it with Rei being inhabited by the Soul of Lilith. Things were going according to his plan until Rei rejects Gendos wishes and instead takes control of it herself. She then fuses with the body of Lilith and creates an Rei-Adam-Lilith god like creature. Unit 01, along with Shinji, become the catalyst of the ritual in conducting the Project. Third Impact occurs and The Human Instrumentality Project is complete. All humans have invisible AT fields that separate us from other people. The Rei-Adam-Lilith hybrid uses an Anti-AT field to destroy our AT fields and create a singular entity free from the blights of existence.

I had watched Dragonball before on TV, but so had everyone else. I don't really count it as my first experience with anime and manga. My real first experience was when I picked up the Evangelion manga at a public library one bored summer as 14 or 15 year old kid. I took the first four volumes home and read them all in one setting. My teenage mind was utterly and completely blown. I just sat there afterwards. I became completely obsessed with the series. Soon afterwards I found out there was a TV show and from there I got into your standard teenage anime stuff like Naruto and Bleach.

The choice was made Shinji, being the catalyst, and also because of Reis maternal instincts, which arouse out of contact with Unit 01s soul, I presume. Shinji chose this because of the current state he was in. Bad things were happening to him his whole life and it's been worse than ever lately. He chose ambivalence over misery. But while he was in this state of Instrumentality, Shinji begins to remember his life and things he has been through, the connections he had made, the times he felt something. Its been a while since I watched it so let me try to tell the plot for you.
First of all everyone in the series is fucked in the head. Especially Shinji and Asuka. They totally want to bang but are too fucked in the head to do it.
That huge explosion thing turned the world into semi post apocalyptic containment world where "Angels" pop up. There are mystical artifacts events around that will allow for the rebirth of humanity, the third impact. A neo(new) genesis(origin). In the end this turns out to be some new reality mind fuckery.
NERV is an organization that monitors this mystical shit and is focused on the Third impact. On surface they want to prevent it but other power players want to use it for their own good. Gendo wants to get his wife back and the Illuminati wants to recreate humanity.
Then comes Shinji who is special. Shinji has a connection to the Mystical shit because part of his mother is in the EVA unit. Same with Asuka. So Shinji has the chance to be some sort of deity and therefore control the third impact. They may or may not have been mind games on Shinji, manipulation by the power players to get what they want. IDK I don't remember correctly.
But Shinji despite his flaws chooses a world where people still be shit instead of a complete utopia and that is the scene in the end with Asuka. It is also the congratulations scene in the Anime. Shinji accepted he is a total fuck up so now he doesn't worry about what people think of him. I hope he fucked Asuka tho I was getting boners in some scenes, that bitch is fine as hell.

I remember being fairly confused since for one, I was 12 at the time, and I only watched Eva one time through, but despite not understanding the specifics of the plot, I just picked up on that horrible raw energy of it. Also, I love how in that scene leading up to human instrumentality, it's like everyone's parents wind up disappointing them.

true, fortunately 1st stage is pretty long, and final stage is pretty short, and 5th wasnt that long either, I probably look at 4th with the most disdain, even if it isnt the worst stage overall imo, just because of how long it drags on. Still I dont think any of the stages are inherently bad, but definitely dipping below where I would really want them to be, I wouldnt watch the whole series if it was all on the same level as 5th stage. But yeah the art definitely got worse too, I actually kind of enjoyed the weird lima bean heads everyone had in 1st stage.
I rewatched it yesterday.
On my like, third viewing now, I only just realised how weirdly not depressing the movie is towards the end. When >>70456245 starts playing it more or less follows the traditional anime "FUCK YEAH ANIME PROTAGONIST IS WINNING NOW" ending, and in the subtext pretty much everyone gets the happy ending they want.

4th is definitely the most boring.
The character art is probably more consistent later on, and the 3d is miles ahead of course, but the 1st stage art is so much more expressive. I agree entirely, especially about Shingo, they changed him up entirely after first stage or so, they even changed the colour of his hair for no discernible reason. The OVAs messed with his characterization a bit too I felt, all of a sudden he went from having this fierce rivalry, standoffish relationship with Takeshi, all of a sudden he's trying to hook him up with Saiyuki, and then back to standoffishness again, it was jarring really.

A lot of people have a lot of interpretations on the ending of EoE, but it actually differs from the ending of the anime (eps 25 and 26) in some ways, anywhere from not at all to quite seriously depending on interpretation. If you do decide to watch the series, I would say watch all of Neon Genesis Eva first, than EoE, it will make more sense, and provide you with another set of tools to look at it with.

I agree in general that their relationship improved and progressed a lot throughout the show, and that losing to Takumi improved their relationship, but like you said, I just thought they were a bit too close in the OVA, and it isn't even that theyre too close, but that I felt like afterwards they were still making the same jokes they were making in the earlier stages about not wanting to be seen watching the races together and such, almost glossing over the OVA. It didn't really bother me too much, I just kind of saw it as odd that after their relationship had suddenly improved so much in the OVA that they were suddenly back at the point where they were in 1st or 2nd stage even though it's like 5th stage at this point.

what's more important is that the emotions, themes, etc. is expressed through visual medium (in this instance). in that regard, even though i have no idea what is ACTUALLY happening within the fictional canon, i do "get it".
and to me the scene, the red ocean, the dark sky, represent the bleakness of reality which shinji has come to terms with. when he sees asuka he basically loses it. all the real world pain and suffering he went through comes back all at once and he looks for a "release" (echoing the FIRST scene of the movie where he is looking for some kind of "release").
when asuka touches his face, he realizes in this bleak real world that there still is hope for happiness. he starts to cry and asuka says her famous last words. in another callback to the first scene, you could say this is her "response" to it. it also encapsulates the feeling of rejection shinji and subsequently anno feel. those final words tell us that even though shinji might find moments of happiness (represented by asukas touch), he still has to deal with the pain, guilt and shame that he creates and that others place on him.
this is my interpretation of the last scene. i didnt need to spam a board or watch some kids "analysis" on youtube to "get it".
it is a powerful movie.
