Then drum up some conversation. If you want to talk about ships in Star Trek, what do you want to discuss?
>>70454710
I want to talk about the design philosophy of the trek ships and how they've had to change over time to remain "futuristic" to contemporary audiences.
For example Sovereign era ships reflect the design trends of the 2000s with their streamlined look, whereas the Constitution era ships which reflects the aesthetics of the 1960s and had a much more angular appearance.

looking futuristic to contemporary audiences is how we ended up with the J.J. shit. They had a really great opportunity to do some retro-futuristic redesigns of the bridge to make the original designs sensible to a modern understanding but nope, the squandered that opportunity instead they just lazily made it look like the Mac Store.

>looking futuristic to contemporary audiences is how we ended up with the J.J. shit.
JJ trek ship designs, like everything else in the movies, was just a glossy hyped up version of the classic designs that people are familiar with, they weren't trying to be futuristic. The last real forward looking (Canon) design that is emblematic of where current design trends are looking is the Enterprise J, but if we accept non canon sources the Enterprise F is pretty slick. It's still streamlined like the Ent E but how has an almost biomechanical element to the hull.
>>70455745
They didn't though, the bridge of the JJprise looks nothing like the bridge of the TOS Enterprise. It's not a hyped up version it's just "uh what do people now think are futuristic? iPhones! Great just make everything look like that." The 1701-J doesn't count because that's a divergent possible future timeline and the F is from STO soo.. eh, who was in charge of approving it with its double neck design?

Things were getting too peaceful... so Mega Rayquaza appeared out of nowhere and fired the spot where all the action was occurring, killing everyone in the process. And what a way to start the show.
>>70455878
JJ's ship wasn't a complete departure from the bridge of the 1960s connie, if you had never need JJ's movie and you saw a still photo you'd be able to identify that it was supposed to be the bridge of the enterprise.
Which is what my point was with the JJ movies, they weren't innovating really, just aping either old ideas ( the original series iconography), or, like you say, modern design aesthetics that have broad market appeal like smart phones.

well to be fair I wasn't a huge fan of the direction the prime series was taking with its designs either. I thought the NX-01 was great and would have loved to see the refit version on screen but I don't particularly like the designs used in Voyager like the intrepid, Prometheus, etc. And I think the 1701-E doesn't look quite as good as old designs either. Actually I'd have to say the Ambassador is my favourite design. Both versions of it are cool.

What in the fuck is all this?

A bunch of videos by some autist who likes star trek. Watch some then come join the discussion about ships and shit.

I agree about the Intrepid class, I alwys thought it was ugly. But you can't tell me the Akira class isn't a badass looking ship. Check out this blog about the design process for the Akira for first contact:

sure, like I said I like the NX-01 and it's essentially an upside down Akira Class.
