Is this as bad as people say? Honest opinions.
It's a well-made, effectively shocking thriller. The use of music is especially well done. It's not great cinema, it's not a great thriller or horror movie, but it's good for what it is. It's intent is horrify by showing people doing awful things to each other, and it does that well. How much that affects you will depend on you.
It's not bad, it's just gratuitous and self indulgent. It has no substance to speak of.
It goes pretty far, and is surprisingly well made. Not much on substance, unless you consider the content to be the message

It's hilarious watching screenwriter's inferiority complex kick in right from the start and drive the movie relentlessly toward continuously more impotent schlock - I mean shock. It's literally "West-senpai please notice me" the movie. As someone living in Serbia, it's very unfortunate that this piece of shit movie (whose one positive feature lies in that it didn't leech money off state funds) is all Westerners know about Yugo/Serb horror. I don't know whether subtitles are available, but check out following titles:

Here, there are english subtitles, it's a top tier psychological horror / slasher. Goran Markovic is (was) a fantastic director. Anica Dobra was actually considered by Spielberg to play Tinkerbell at the time.

Not that bad really. It's not great either though. The shock value sticks in peoples minds because it's the kind of thing that you expect to see in a zero budget straight-to-video exploitation flick with fake blood and bad actors and shot on an old handycam. When it's in a movie with high production values and a couple of obviously talented people behind the camera it stands out and more people will remember/talk about it.

Sorry, when I said ''behind the camera'' I meant the crew in general not just the director and dp and camera operator and lighting guys, but also like guys the editor, music guy, set dressers, fx guys, etc.
I'm not saying it was made by a bunch of film geniuses, only that if there was not one single person with at least some measure of talent involved it would never have gotten so much attention.

I don't shit on it because of its title, it's about the inferiority complex exercised through it. Granted, more conservative part of the audience concerned about "image" will shit on it for that reason alone but it's funny that in the end both them and the scriptwriter himself meet at the junction where a pathetic desire to be noticed and acclaimed in the West comes at the forefront. It's a special snowflake movie, designed to outshock the shockers but in an attempt to do so it neglects any sort of storytelling skill, develops extreme tunnel vision and in the end tries to sell mind numbing metaphors as social commentary. It's basically libtard grindhouse.
Imagine if Von Trier's Antichrist featured only a scene where wife pounds husband's cock with a hammer and then cut to "dedicated to Andrei Tarkovsky". That's A Serbian Movie.
