And I think the Matt Smith run was pretty close to this ideal. It /did/ rely a lot on lore, but the episodes were straightforward enough that a child could get something out of them. Plus, Doctor Who is supposed to be scary to children. My mother and aunt describe watching it when they were 9-12-ish, and hiding behind the couch half the time. That's how it's supposed to be watched, some episodes anyway. The Silence are perfect, Daleks have been reduced to a punchline by pop culture, so even kids aren't scared of them.
Kids like being scared. Read Roald Dahl.
And it's the kind of thing they'll happily rewatch later in life, and /then/ they'll get the weirder stuff.

I think the reason it seems like an odd fit for Disney is, Disney seems to represent a certain safe wholesomeness in family-friendly media.
Whereas Doctor Who pretty much harvests its power from straddling the borderline between comforting normalcy and total aesthetic oddness, the points where the nice and universal tale of a quirky fellow on adventures suddenly hits the roughage of being an idiosyncratic and spiky British thing, but becomes all the more lovable in the resulting mad glory.
I think if Doctor Who was ever the kind of series that completely fit in among Disney's line-up, it would have lost something.

Working my way through Pertwee, just finished Death to the Daleks, which was OK, but not amazing or anything. Reading that autistic website where they talk about where they get all the Dalek props from, how they're handled and painted and put together from various bits of other Daleks etc. Lamenting how shit the black/grey standard Daleks always look in studio from Pertwee right up to the end of the classic run, with the studio lights reflecting off of them and the cracks in the paint showing. The silver paint on the Daleks in DTTD looked very good and was not reflective.
Into Peladon next. Looking forward to it as I enjoyed the last Peladon tale.

Impossible, it's shot at 25fps BBC pulse since Rose. And even though it was shot on low definition video, they deleted half the frames to give it that "film look".
Now they mess with the framerate and audio pitch in order to make new episodes 24000/1001fps even though it's shot at 25fps. All for people's precious BluRays. So the only episodes available at true framerate are WEBRiPs and 720p.HDTV rips from the original sources. BluRay discs will have better image quality but they screw with the framerate to bring it to 23.976 when it should be 25.
