This is THE MOST OVERRATED PIECE OF SHIT OF ALL TIMES.
There's never going to be another movie as overrated as this. I'll never understand why people praise this garbage so much. I like other Kubrick films, but this? It's even worse than Eyes Wide Shut, and that movie is fucking garbage.
Can you think of another terrible movie as overrated as 2001?
>>70425861
Never seen this. Wtf is it even about?
eternal sunshine
>>70425861
>I bet he liked BvS
>it's an every credible sources praises it and butthurt teenagers hate it episode
>>70425861
Couldn't understand it huh? Maybe you should watch it a few more times, or just look up what it's supposed to mean if that's too hard for you.
>>70425861
>the monkey suits
How could anyone take that shit seriously?
>>70426163
Bad bait. Those suits were literally top notch for the time. At least they look like real things and not cgi.
>>70425990
good post bro
>>70425956
Not even close.
>>70425998
Armond hates it too, so it's all good OP, don't listen to this faggot.
Must be fun being 15
>>70425861
>Can you think of another terrible movie as overrated as 2001?
Blade Runner, Fantasia, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Beauty & The Beast
>>70426692
This, Blade Runner is a very close contender.
>Underage honeypot: the Thread
Nice one mods.
It's ok to have your own opinion anon I hope you find many films you can enjoy in the future
>>70426692
I like all of those movies desu
Not sure about Beauty and the Beast but it's been years since I watched it.
2001 is pretty much my favourite movie, with Blade Runner definitely in the top 5.
>>70425861
2001 stays overrated because of STEMfags thinking the robopocolypse is coming and wanting others to solve it for them, the only way it is solved is by not being a STEMfag.
But EWS is the cure for people stuck in this mode, it's an explanation of the dynamic in sexual relationships and male status (with level defined by who??) as a primary motivator.
>>70427033
I barely even use IMDB for anything. I've been a Kubrick fan for a long time though.
>>70425891
Its about evolution
I agree, the film is very overrated.
I watched it alone, and I enjoyed it.
I had the patience, wasn't in a rush to get through it, and enjoy most space related topics. I watched it again with a friend and he was close to tears at the end, because of how shit he thought the film was. And I could sympathise with him.
If you haven't read the book, the ending to the film makes absolutely no sense at all and is a bit of a slap in the face for sitting through x hours of monkeys fighting and spaceship docking scenes.
>>70425861
i agree
>>70426927
>>70426034
Why does a movie having "meaning" make it better?
>>70427149
gad fnbc vg adfgadfg adfg adfg adfgfgffgb fgfgfgfg acnqer
>>70427149
Would you go watch a movie which is a string of random clips pieced together with no thought for the meaning?
>>70427149
Could you try a little harder with the bait, anon?
>>70425861
The first and last half hours are pretentious garbage, but aside from that I think it's a pretty decent sci fi movie that informed the genre for years to come.
I liked it. I got to see it in a cinema and there were bits that were terrifying and emotive.
I do wonder what the purpose of the middle section is though (right after the apes). I imagine it was a bit of worldbuilding and it did lead to some astonishing set pieces - but it didn't add much to the story.
>>70427149
Because it does something other than placate you with mindless entertainment, and art is completely pointless without meaning you fucking pleb
It gets better each time you watch it. I also hated it the first time. Now it's in my top 10
>>70427115
I haven't read the book and loved the ending.
My understanding is that the movie is a lot more open-ended than the book anyway, leaving a lot up to personal interpretation. I really never understood why so many people here hate ambiguity in film.
>>70427173
>>70427177
>>70427191
>>70427271
Yeah but just because something has meaning to it doesn't make it good automatically
>>70427214
>The first and last half hours are pretentious garbage
how is the first part pretentious? it's silly monkeys doing silly things with recording of lion roars on top of it to make everything even more hilarious.
>>70427090
Evolution and the nature of "God," as well as out relationship with that entity.
>>70427341
Obviously not, but chances are it'll be better for it and far better than something completely vapid
>>70427341
That's why the meaning needs to be recognisable to you, either you will see it and find it significant or you won't. I don't think kubrick would agree to the existence of objective meaning either, he wants you to interpret too.
>>70426692
Spirited Away? No fucking way. Also, Beauty and The Beast is a fine movie. I don't think anyone holds it in that high of a regard. It's just another Disney movie.
>>70427173
>>70427177
>>70427271
>>70427454
Emotive Response > Meaning.
Though, the two aren't mutually exclusive.
>>70427484
Yeah but meaning is more likely to evoke and emotional response. Like you said, they compliment each other
>>70427512
an*, not and
>>70427484
I could watch ISIS beheadings all day if I want potency. It's more about the meaning being significant to you, and you won't learn those skills of discernment just being an emotionally reactive being all the live long day.
>have an opinion
>it goes against pretty much everyone else's opinion
>for some reason you must be in the right
Why? What makes you special? It's okay if something's not your cup of tea, but maybe there's something to it that you didn't get? Seriously, people should stop thinking so highly of themselves.
>>70427591
Leave OP alone. Puberty is hitting him like a truck
People only say it's good cause at it's time everything was well made. And also that deep deep meaning that everyone claims to understand to come off as enlightened.
If you watch it today you'll just think it's garbage and that AI was pretty neato.
>>70427688
At least he isn't passive aggressively insulting people.
>>70427512
>>70427553
I feel most of the meaning in 2001 comes from the emotive response. I was terrified by the stargate sequence, even more so by the still frames of the guys face.
Why was my response at all emotional? Because it felt wrong, it felt like there was no place for humans in that portal and I had no idea what was going to happen - that's where the meaning and emotional response work together.
It was impactful in a way that didn't need to provide clear meaning.
That being said, I have no clue about the space-womb. I can't make any sense of that, even looking at the emotive response.
Art is meant to make you feel, above all else. If a random string of letters like >>70427173
could evoke the awe 2001 did or something, then it works.
>>70427744
>He didn't get 2001
>>70427780
Yes. 2001 is an experience more than anything. That entire sequence was amazing
>>70427744
>He didn't get 2001
I feel like people only "like" it cause they're supposed to like it
If all the critics said it was shit they would too
>>70425861
I think the visuals are great and enjoy the atmosphere but the plot is boring
Don't think it's bad though.
Same thing with Eyes Wide Shut. The atmosphere is great but the plot is pretty dumb.
Not like there's really anything wrong with that.
holy shit this movie wasn't made in 2001
>>70427865
The only experience I got from it was boredom.
>>70427896
This.
>>70427896
Nah its objectively great. Watch it again
>>70427925
It's not an easy watch and some of the purpose of some of the scenes (look how amazing technology is) wouldn't be as impactful on a modern audience.
It's foolish to deny the impact and the quality of this film.
There wasnt even a singel gun in the hole movie. Like, uhhh hello?! How the F am I suppost to enjoy that????
more like I fell asleep 2001 seconds after the movie started haha
This movie is a religious experience.
>boring
>overrated
These terms are instant marks of someone who doesn't know how to properly analyze or critique a movie.
I'm not saying to stop using them, since it's a nice way to immediately recognize morons who's opinions can be safely disregarded.
>>70428057
2001 seconds is 3 hours
>>70428106
You forgot one:
>pretentious
Should I watch Barry Lyndon or Eyes Wide Shut tonight?
>>70428112
2001 seconds was 10 years ago
>>70428057
You fell asleep after only 33 minutes? You didn't even get the best part; Finding the monolith on the moon.
>>70428106
It's most certainly not boring, but I can safely say it is overrated.
>>70428175
That was probably my most favorite part. The way thet walk out and they see it. Amaze. It put me in deep thought about the world outside our own and all it's wonder.
>>70428106
I don't really know about that. As someone who thought 2001 was excellent, I'm not completely sure a movie needs to be a puzzle box or a mystery to be analysed and critiqued to be good.
>>70427173

>he didn't get it meme
There's nothing to "get" in the movie version of 2001. There's no exposition, no meaningful bits of dialogue or other conveyances to enlighten us, the watcher, as to what Kubrick wanted to tell us. That's because there is nothing. This is a movie much like Avatar; it's a special effects showcase with a really weak story. Unfortunately, Kubrick's slow-burn approach in the film makes it a drag to watch. I mean really. 10 minutes of a stewardess serving a tray of liquid food in a space-plane? That has no relevance to the story. It's not even that interesting to watch anymore. To a 1960's audience it would be like fucking magic. People don't get why 2001 is so highly rated, and instead of recognizing that it's riding on its special effects, they pretend to enjoy the lame-ass story and molasses-speed pacing of it and call it a "brilliant story" when there really isn't one. People find monolith, people go to Saturn, robot malfunctions for no fucking reason (we're never even told why he thinks the mission is a bad idea), dude goes through wormhole, dude becomes a space fetus. Wow, a story to rival the og Odyssey.
>>70428401
>There is no exposition or meaningless filler dialogue
Nothing spoken aloud, no. But, it's all there.
>>70428400
I'm talking about the idea that aliens were present throughout our history and made mankind advance
A few good scenes and nice cinmetography apart, the movie is unimpressive
>>70428401
You don't necessarily need exposition or dialogue to convey information. Film is a visual medium, after all. There is actually some exposition in the movie though, through the dialogue
>>70428457
Oh so you didn't actually watch it. Cool, opinion invalidated.
>>70428457
>throughout history
They were only there once. Then, they spend several million years in their own dimension doing whatever it is that they do, waiting to see if we'd follow their breadcrumbs. That's not throughout. The guy driving the forklift at the beginning of Jurassic Park isn't regarded as being present throughout the film.
>>70428451
No, it's not. We have no insight as to:
A) Why the characters do what they do
B) Why the robot fucking malfunctions
C) What the fuck they plan to do when they get to Saturn (before HAL tries to kill them)
Not to mention numerous other smaller plot holes
>>70428482
Maybe if this movie was slapstick or something. If you want to tell a complicated story, you should give some sort of indication as to what the characters are thinking or feeling. Otherwise you;re left with shitty background noise with no investment.
>>70428522
Nigger you're fucking dumb
>>70428550
>The monolith buried under the lunar surface totally wasn't monitoring us guys!
Kubrikucks, everyone
2010 was cool though
>>70428589
It's all there if you pay attention and fill in the gaps logically. And the story isn't particularly complicated.
>>70428589
>A) Why the characters do what they do
What do you mean? At what point are you like "why are they doing this?"
>B) Why the robot fucking malfunctions
I feel there's enough there for you to work it out yourself. External influences and that.
>C) What the fuck they plan to do when they get to Saturn (before HAL tries to kill them)
Again, you don't need to know that watching the movie but there's enough there for you to work it out if that's important to you.
>>70428814
>You should have to critically analyze a movie to fill in the creator's incompitence

>He still doesn't get 2001

>He thinks there's something to get about 2001

>>70425990
That movie really was garbage. I was talking to a friend of mine about decent movies we've seen lately and he brought it up, talking about how great it was and I just had to sit there with dead eyes nodding because I didn't want to make him feel like a retard.

We don't see the monolith being discovered. We only see Floyd's visit after its been found.
>>70425861
Silly little kid. You'll never get it.
It was a great film IN IT'S TIME.
It really boils down to the fact that actual space travel was new in the 1960s, and people were awed by both the concept, as well as the journey itself.
This film was released in a time where people actually had a genuine sense of wonder, and a genuine hope for the future of mankind. The general population was more intelligent then; more educated, more cohesive, and more caring.
The rise of the jewish-led counter-culture, and the riots of 1968 and beyond ruined all of that. The world today is a much different world than the one this film came out of. It's really a shame it all fell apart the way it did. Now all of our wonderful ideals are constantly trashed by whores, faggots, and jews, and the minds of our youth are poisoned by the intellectual garbage they continue to produce.
So no. You'll never understand it. It's just one of those cases where you really had to be there.
It'd be nice if we could make the world great again. You would be so amazed... in a good way.
>>70427902
>but the plot is boring
>but the plot is pretty dumb
>MUH PLOT!
Kill yourself.
>>70428152
They're both great, so you should watch both. Eyes Wide Shut suffers a bit from the whole Kubrick dying thing tho.
>>70425861
I bet you enjoy Reddit films.
The writing, the story meh.
Visuals, cinematography, the framing/composition of the shots, the colors, all GOD -TIER and as somebody who is into photography/painting, this is what makes the movie amazing to me. I could see how most people wouldn't like it.
>>70433272

Spirited Away goes to complete shit during the third arc.
And Beauty and the Beast has bad animation, but everybody acts like it's the greatest thing of all time.
Disney has released a lot better than Beauty and the Beast, Dreamworks Animation too, but Beauty and the Beast is the only animated movie to get nominated for "Best Movie" at the Oscars.
