I saw it yesterday, it was actually pretty bad. I let the blizzdrones get into my head and I had a bit of high expectations. Turns out it was a mistake. I've seen the movie. I've played wow 6 years, played all warcraft rts in their prime. And let me tell you i definitely did not love the movie.
The reports are correct, Guldan and the orcs overall is the good bit as the vfx are very well done, but the alliance actors are bad, the editing is clumsy, and the storytelling flow is weird to say the least.
This movie doesn't even spend a single minute trying to present and explain draenor, azeroth, the kingdoms or the clans. Not a minute. They don't even explain what the guardian is besides this cheesy line: 'I am the Guardian, I will protect Azeroth". The movie doesn't explain Medivh's corruption.
Dominic Cooper was incredibly bad, he had nothing kingly about him and delivered 90% of his cheesy lines like a soulless robot. Patton was apparently competing with him as to decide who was the most terrible actor. Foster was very hit or miss. Khadgar and Lothar were the only 2 characters somewhat well adapted/acted on the alliance side.
The romance plot line between Lothar and Garona was utter shit, borderline cringe. The plotline about Lothar and his son was completely skippable, it did not matter in any meaningful way at all.
The cinematography was all over the place. You have great camera work and you have pissing poor camera work. You have amazingly well lit scenes and you have horribly lit scenes (act 3 karazhan stands out as incredibly bad).
The music was ok but very forgettable, too little from the games and only one theme truly stands out. Also I can't remember the last time I saw the title screen used twice in a movie. That felt so fucking weird and completely out of place.
This movie stinks of meddling from several parties. The universal execs, the blizzard execs, the legendary execs, and ofc Duncan Jones. I would be very curious to see a longer cut and get a better feel of what Jones's vision was. We've ended up with a flawed adaptation IMO.

Funny you should say that, in Fellowship of the Ring, the first 15 minutes of the film is just that. Explanations. Sure they didn't mention Morgoth, Numenor or the 5 battles of the first age. But they addressed the origins and motives of Sauron just enough so that audiences would understand a tiny bit what was going on. And it was all done in a monologue voice over, not really conveyed by dialogues. You even had a map of middle earth in there.
In warcraft? Nothing. Zip. Zero. Not even a map or a continental shot. The movie begins in Draenor's Hellfire peninsula, you don't even know it's Draenor if you don't know the game's lore. Nothing is written. It could very well be another continent on azeroth, it's completely unclear.
There's a difference between not doing over-explanations and not doing explanations at all. After watching the movie I do not know how, why, or when Medivh was corrupted. It's a big mistake for the script to not address this IMO.
The coup de théatre, the last minute reveal, doesn't bear any dramatic weight because of this. "Some dude wizard got corrupted for some reason and I couldn't care any less" is precisely what non warcraft audiences will say.

I don't think so, originally they didn't really explain it, the war lasted much longer than depicted in the movie (many years) with small orc raiding parties invading aezeroth, so it was assumed that somewhere at that time rape this way or another happened and Garona came to live.
But later she was retconed to be half draenei (she along with everyone else though she was half human because they had no idea what draenei were) and in some retarded comic had romance with Medvih.
I like film's take on the story though. Just like the change of her finale didn't bother me this much. I still think the original had much more potential, but what they did was OK.

I went to see X-Men Apocalypse, the theatre was packed with people waiting for the doors were opened.

It's a High Fantasy movie that takes itself very, very seriously.
I liked it but the Guardian motives didn't make any sense, and the Orc "sacrifice" amounted to literally nothing.

I sort of liked it as a brain off fantasy film, but as someone not entirely familiar with Warcraft other than having friends who play WoW and general osmosis of info, I agree with a lot of what you said.
The editing and the lack of world building really hit the hardest though. I can handle bad acting in fantasy films, but when you don't even get an idea of the characters beyond "loyal knight" "king bloke" "probably evil wizard" it grates. The orcs were generally great though, and I wish the film focused on them a lot more.
Nothing was done to establish Azeroth as anything more than generic cartoony fantasy land. You only get the briefest of glimpses of the world outside of the narrative bubble, so so much stuff takes you by surprise in a bad way.
Like "Oh, the wizard thing is in a floating city?" "Oh, they fly around on Gryphons?." "Oh there's Dwarves in this, (except for when there isn't)."
The visuals were nicely done, especially the CGI characters. But so much of the magic stuff looked uber cheesy. I get that this is because it's based on a video game, and they stuck to the visuals from that (though what I've seen of Warcraft 1 and 2 seems more dark comic fantasy as opposed to cartoon comic fantasy. 2000ADish.) It felt really jarring seeing these normal actors wearing cartoon armour and living in cartoon cities, and I feel it would have been better if the whole film had been animated. Probably would have been much cheaper to make as well.
The editing though, Christ. It felt like someone had gone in to a lot of close ups and cut four seconds off. The battle scenes were nice, but some were really confusing to follow. Also it's clear as fucking day that a lot of the film has been cut out. Characters switched sides and did shit without much logical thought. Like Duratan's friend. He starts on Duratan's side, then he turns and attacks the clan (but lets the baby go) but then he turns back again during the one on one fight. It feels really confusing.

they didn't explain it well but he was good guy all along, it's just that he had a daemon inside him (in original lore Sargeras waited in his mother womb to posses him) that made him do things he didn't even remember and were, well evil
he was trying to do the right things but once he realized that all that happened was his fault he was unable to fight back anymore and the deamon possessed him fully at the end
he regained his true self upon dying and thus changed the incantation to save his peoplein games he returns to save humanity and the orcs when deamons invade the world

Why do /tv/ posters think literally every movie is good?
The CGI actors acted better than the real life actors. That was fucking bizarre and I dont think Ive ever seen something like that before. The CG character have clear facial emotions and emotional feel to their voices, the live actors all seem to be playing the same monotone personality delivering lines in a flat drab tone. Fucking weird.
I feel like the movie wouldve been much better if it were all CG, the action is where this shines, and the live action action scenes look kindof wierd at times. I want to see it again before I can give it a rating, its sitting at 3/5 for me at the moment, I liked alot about it but it just didnt quite stick for me.
I feel that if you hated John Carters excessive CGI and suspension of disbelief to tell a fantasy world you will fucking loathe this movie.

CGI actors/voice actors have to rely on being able to perform really well using all physical means and capturing subtle cues. Most of them should honestly replace big screen ""((actors))"".
