can I gain a deeper understanding of movies by reading articles about things I watched? if not, what are other good ways?

Absolutely

Read some intro level philosophy, all creative types are familiar with it to some degree. Though most movies will appear not very deep thematically once you've tackled that subject because they usually amount to the condoning or approval of a certain moral stance that concerns the director.

You always miss stuff, seeing how other people process the movie gives you additional insight you'd never get otherwise.

Try and pick the root plot point or idea, guess the original cause that spawned the rest of the movie i.e. what parts were thrown in to distract or to make the part more alluring for such and such actor or make the ending perfect etc.

this. even if you think you 'got' everything in a movie another guy who also 'got it' will have different life experience and stuff and will maybe see something from a different angle that you wouldn't notice for days/months/years.
