It's females. Look at any semi-popular media that has multiple different male cast, and you will inevitably see a good amount of gay shipping, especially if they're close or appear to have any kind of friendship, just look at Finn and Poe.
It's because women aren't really able to comprehend the whole "Brotherhood" aspect of male friendships. There's a strong sense of familiarity, honor, and mutual sacrifice that they don't ever get nor could understand in their own relationships. To them, the way to forge that kind of close bond is through romantic love, and so the shipping occurs.
