I don't remember anything from the opening crawl.

The movie is kinda hazzy too... they start on Jakku (not Tatooine) and... Kanjiklub, then the forest planet... and some stuff on the Death Star. Right?

Only dumbass contrarians think it was terrible. It was too much like ANH, the main character was bland and it doesn't give the vast impression Star Wars should, but it wasn't a bad film by any means. It was just alright.

I feel like I can at least enjoy the prequels as a train wreck and appreciate some of the thought that went into all the locations. Force Awakens is a better movie but it's just so drab and I barely remember any intense moments of dialogue through all the shit exploding
>>
>>70413562

no, it wasnt better than any of them.

its a rehash of a previously done plot which completely negates its legitimacy as it is.

the only good new character was the black dude and maybe the pilot.

people had to figure that disney would give the princess treatment to this franchise since they bought it so its the hand we are dealt with.

episodes 1-3 werent great movies, but theyre better star wars movies than TFA

It was bad. What was even the point of it? It was more like a tribute to the old trilogy than an actual movie on its own. They didn't do anything remotely original or expand on the universe in any way. Everything was just a nostalgic set piece.

Not to mention how full of plotholes it is.

No they aren't, they don't understand the spirit of SW.

They gave Yoda a lightsaber, the lightsaber battles sucked and had no depth, Jedi wore Farmer Robes, Jar Jar, shitty love story, etc.

Look at this and tell me that's better than TFA.

you're cherrypicking.

the saber battles weren't bad at all, idk where you're going with that.

jar jar and the gungans were fucking dumb, that's pretty much universally agreed upon.

you can't tell me you took the emo whiny douche that is supposed to be the next 'vader' of the series seriously when all he did was throw temper tantrums and get beat in saber duels by someone who has never used one.

also, the cringey fucking part where he goes to interrogate her with the force and she ends up resisting and using a jedi mind trick to escape. Jokes, dude.

like i said, TFA was a good movie, but not a good star wars. its rehashed, old, used up. it isnt original and it fed on nostalgia.

Reminds me of Skyfall.

No it wasnt. It mainly acted as a tribute to all the other Bond movies with the gadget, old car references. Skyfall had a better script but Spectre had far better rich environments and that one didnt end with a Home Alone rip off montage

I am a bit upset about that, because it seems worse than the Nostalgia pandering Lucas did in the prequels.
They had some nice cinematography and I did like the characters, except Rey because she seemed too good, but it feels like they wanted to play it safe, way too much.

Kylo is actually an amazing fresh character.

>Keeps his helmet in a case filled of enemy ashes
Yes he is a wannabe Vader but then that is the way his character is written: it is symbolic of human society, how we wish to be exact copycats of others.

Actually an intelligent film by Disney in places. Otherwise my main problem with the film is the running time. It was far too short to better get to know the new characters as they spent majority of the time running and being chased.

I think a big reason TFA gets hate that has nothing to do with the actual movie is that it was made by Disney.

The Disney buyout of Lucasfilm and their immediate decision to start making SW films as fast as possible just comes off as very cold business to a lot of people. People had made up their mind, before TFA came out, that Disney SW movies are just product and not movies.

When the comparison to A New Hope started being made after TFA came out, people got very negative, especially with the idea Disney's motive was just to make product that appealed to the long-term fans who knew REAL SW was Ep 4-6. Nostalgia money. Hating The Force Awakens was the result of that.

It kinda feel like a "corporate cog", sure every product is made with the idea of selling it to make a profit, heck Coppola would have not worked on the Godfather had it not been for his debt problems, but it kinda feels like they just thought out what would work best in the shortest term, like when they closed Lucasarts, which had 1 completed game ready to ship and a huge TPS-RPG starring Boba Feet (on Lucas personal request otherwise the game would have probably been ready by then) that was even presented at E3.
Sure on the short term, that's less salaries to pay, more money for you, but is also like buying a corn field and burning the corn that was about to mature just because you want to build something the next week, you did not pay for it so no loss but you also ruined a huge potential for profit.

>>
>>70414480
Kylo was just about the only risk they took, actually. And half the audience hates him for not being a badass like Vader despite that being the point.

I don't expect them to take too many risks going forward either. Rian Johnson is good, but I can see Disney nixing any attempt to go interesting directions with the characters. Rey will probably "struggle" with the dark side on paper but mostly just stay the perfect role model.
>>
>>70414596
He is afraid to show his face. He looks away like a little bitch when Hux walks in on him talking with Snoke without his mask.

I don't remember everything looking so obviously CG'd.

TFA was great but it was a rehash of ANH. JJ Abrams basically confirmed it because Disney didn't think the GA would be able to handle anything else but the safest possible film.

Rey was well acted but she was definitely overpowered (muh strong womyn).

Finn was well acted but way too fucking comedic for someone who's been trained to kill his entire life.

Kylo Ren was well acted but I left the theater feeling embarrassed for him because of how badly Rey fucked him up.

I'll give you the part from 0:23 to 0:48 tough.
>stronger connection with characters so the stakes feel much higher
I felt no connection what so ever to any of those characters since the movie just throws them all at you from the get go instead of easing into them and getting to know them.
>lighting
its absolute trash in that scene though. just a dark dull blueish color with the sabers as a very contrasting bright flare makes for a not so good scene.
They could have added some lights behind the trees to create some shadows for a more epic and ominous feeling but no, its just a dull dark blue snowy forest.

also, it has a very jarring cut. when Finn is on the ground at 0:34 and goes to stand up, he is already standing in 0:35 a frame later.

>better choreography
webm didnt really depict a scene that needed fighting choreography but ok.

its absolute abysmal. after almost every attack there is a cut. cut cut cut all the time.
you could probably choreograph a fighting scene better than this one.

You fucking call the lighting bad in a scene where the lightsabers literally reflect off of every fucking surface, including the actors' eyeballs over a sequence with absolute shit early 2000s lighting.

I was baited. It took me this long but I caught on. Ending my post here. Fuck this I'm out.

I love the battle between Finn and Kylo (feels like a real swordfight) but the part with Rey is fucking dumb (suddenly becomes a master of the force in a matter of seconds when it took Anakin and Luke years to train).

I still get a chubby from those lightsabers man, I love seeing them smoke up in the snow.

>You fucking call the lighting bad in a scene where the lightsabers literally reflect off of every fucking surface, including the actors' eyeballs over a sequence with absolute shit early 2000s lighting.
Fuck yeah i do. No, the lightsaber ambient lighting is all good im talking about the lighting on the rest of the set.
Its like the lighting department had a day off and they just wandered into some dark woods to shoot that sequence.
I mean fucking look at it! It is the definition of DULL.

The light from the lasers in the dust shootout in the webm also reflects on the troopers as well as cast ambient light onto the dust in the air as they fly on by.

And calling the geonosis lighting shit whilst praising the lighting(or should i say lack off) in the arguably most boring looking forest shot in any movie ever is absolutely mental.

>well established main characters
i refer you back to "the movie just throws them all at you from the get go instead of easing into them and getting to know them"

as for the no emotion comment i agree but we're talking about two different engagements here.
we have one were clone soldiers who are bred for war fighting open ground combat and one where the main characters are duking it out in a fight that is supposed to be emotional but just ends up being a very generic sword fighting scene that tries its best to imitate the battles in the OT but ultimately falls flat due to the incredibly awkward editing as well as delivery from the actors.

I mean for gods sake, take a look here.

1:15. In canyon fighting. 1:16. the next frame, in woods again, canyon no where in sight.
Its like they thought action meant "many clips in quick succession".
So no good choreography there. Editing is shot to shit with all those cuts that make no fucking sense. Stale emotional fight. Ambient lighting that my room actually trumps.
>>
>>70418961

Yeah but there are other ways to do dull and cloudy instead of actually making it dull and cloudy.
What they could have done is this.
Add a wee bit more background lighting to bring out some more detail instead of making it all a strange blue-hue forest with white(blue-ish) snow and very very dark not snowy parts.
Like in pic to the left here. See that blurry dark mess in the background? yeah, pop some lights over there to get those branches to cast some shadows as well as more lights to highlight the falling snowflakes.

Also, increase the lightsabers light intensity as a whole to bring out the surrounding areas via the ambient red and blue lighting having them cast beautiful shadows instead of being a red and a blue spot on the ground right below them.

As well as get some proper choreography instead of cut after cut after cut.
Build suspension through a long cut lasting several seconds. Allow the audience to actually take in the action instead of cutting to the next little clip after one or two strokes with the sabre has been unleashed.

The only long cut that was supposed to give actual suspension was the Rey vs Kylo sword push battle 2/3'rds in but that ends up looking really forced and lame due to the acting of the Rey girl as it looks like no force is being imparted on her at all. Kylo is good though. There's also no suspense on the first view of the movie because we have seen what this Rey chick can do, she seems to be a natural learner so we presume that she will make it out OK, and who could have guess, she does. So no suspense there either.

The whole darn thing was infected with so much Hollywood.

>>
>>70416942
I liked that scene until she tried again and succeeded. As a joke I can forgive her practicing a technique she had no reason to know about but turning it in to a necessary plot point so she doesn't have to be saved by her friends was just bollocks.

>>
>>70412738
>Luke Skywalker went out for cigarettes and never came back

>>
>>70420710
Yeah, this is an American editing trend. Most cuts in action scenes are down to something absurd like an average of a whole second between them now. It honestly frustrates me to no end.

The choreography in TFA's final lightsaber duels is very nice. The cuts get obnoxious when Rey is fighting. They're tolerable with Finn. There's actually some decent framing through it all when the cuts aren't being spastic.
>>
>>70420710
Yeah true. I just made the assumption that it was poor choreography that resulted in the abundance of cuts the fight had.
Still, until we get an extended and better cut fighting scene we'll never know if the choreography was good or just decent.

I'll add that some of the short choreography cuts was alright but its the strange cuts that cause the actors to stand in different places and hold different postures than the one they did in the previous cut that makes me say that the choreography was bad, as in they relied on short bursts of movements and lots of cuts to make up for the fact that they couldn't(or didn't want to) choreograph a longer sequence.
That's what caused me to hold the opinion that the choreography was bad. But yeah, I agree with you. The fault lies with the editor, director and whomever else had any say in how the final cut came out.

Not him but Anakin was being corrupted by the dark side as well as losing padme and all that so his frustration is understandable.
Kylo though. I have no idea why he was so upset.

Anakin was also beat by someone much stronger than him(Doku) as well as more tactical and in tune with the force(Obbi)

Rey just kind of learnt everything she had to with no difficulties because the plot demanded it of her.
>>
>>70421335
>Kylo though. I have no idea why he was so upset.
He was being corrupted by the dark side and was getting cucked left and right pursuing Rey and the map.
>Anakin was also beat by someone much stronger than him
A strong fault of TFA is not making this clear enough, though there is exposition that covers it: Rey is far stronger in the force than him. He is emotionally unstable and has not yet fully embraced his training. You see that dinosaur Jedi in the prequels get his shit pushed in by Jango up on the balcony? Low level force users are fallible.

Like it or not, Rey is a natural and got lucky against a heavily distraught and wounded opponent. It's all fucking there. The movie isn't the greatest but you don't need to grasp so hard to try and knock it.
>>
Well, originally it was the tale of the hero with nothing, climbing to fight the forces of evil.

With Rey, there was no climb and she just shitblasted the forces of evil. Mary Sue doesn't even begin to describe how she could pilot the MF like she lived in a starship.

JJ just went "BLEH, I HATE THIS SHIT SO MUCH JUST TRY AN AXPLAINIT!"

>He was being corrupted by the dark side and was getting cucked left and right pursuing Rey and the map.
Its these things i wish they expanded upon because on my first(and only) viewing these things were not made clear to me.. or perhaps the fault lies with me for not paying enough attention. Its just that the movie was all over the place so picking up on info and holding onto it gets quite hard when you have some kanji klob, scotsman and giant fucking space monster show up within minutes of each other.

I got the whole Rey is a natural thing as well but it was so forced that throughout the whole movie she just seemed like some unstoppable force.
Combine that with the little we know of her and it just makes for a very strange experience.

Hopefully it will be expanded upon in the newer instalments.
>>
>>70421553
That's the two issues my mind harps on with TFA. They overstressed Rey's angle and in some ways undersold Kylo's. The basic structure is there though and I feel it works despite itself overall. Kylo actually fully embodies the sith code which I got a kick out of for what that was worth.

Basically Kylo and Rey are both self made people with insecurities. Kylo has embraced rage while Rey is clinging to hope. It's outright stated that Rey is stronger in the force than Kylo. Basically it's Liquid vs Solid Snake.

I fully expect for there to be a give and take between the two as they develop. I don't like a single movie being incomplete but I do hope for this now that TFA is what it is. It needs a sequel to knock Rey down a peg as Kylo rebounds.

I'd rather not repeat what's been pounding on and on throughout this thread, but it is true that what most annoyed me by the movie is that it was clearly all gauged to be a box-office success which "gratifies" the older fans by providing them with an exact copy to New Hope.

The characters are also meh.

And beyond that, no intensity is ever experienced in the movie. Somehow it attempts to portray the First Order's strength with them annihilating an entire star system, but seems to me that everyone in the theater was underwhelmed. That same issue applies to the trench run by the end of the movie where there seem to be barely any stakes...

But let me give special praise to what most annoyed me:

So as I was merrily watching the trailers for the movie, it did become pretty apparent that the movie would basically repeat 'A New Hope' but I wasn't too annoyed because, I'd expected that anyways. But those unsubtle traces of pandering were pretty much compensated by what seemed to be promises for newer elements; the Knights of Ren, Kylo's backstory, that female stormpower.

And in watching the movie, what am I gifted with: ABSOLUTELY NO KNIGHTS OF REN SCENE EXCEPT IN A FLASHBACK LASTING AS LONG AS THE FUCKING TRAILER

NO FUCKING KYLO BACSTORY
JUST SO THE MOVIE CAN SPEED US INTO AN UNINTERESTING RESISTANCE (Rebels) vs FIRST ORDER (empire) STORY

AND THE STORMPOWER SERVED NO FUCKING PURPOSE AT ALL OTHER THAN TO SELL TOYS
