i thought it was ok. i didn't know too much about the real hoover to begin with, so i didn't have any preconceived notions of whether he was right for bringing the science of forensics into what became the first federal criminal investigative unit (later the FBI), or whether he was bad for his abuses of power and supposed personal perversions. eastwood didn't help me make up my mind - he played both sides pretty equally.
but technically, it's a fine move. leo does well, armie hammer does really well, and i think the cinematography is well done.
i suspect if you like anything clint eastwood has directed in the last 20 years, you'll like this.

As usual the cinematography is drained of all color and there's some shit CGI thrown around to recreate the period.
It's not a terrible Leo performance but it definitely didn't deserve the oscar nom, neither did the makeup.
If you actually like 21st century Eastwood I don't see why you won't like it, but I can't stand him.
