Season 2 is a shitshow compared to S1. The awkward dialog, sprawling plot, and (for me) unsympathetic characters make the first 4 eps extremely jarring. The whole story and writing was better in S1.
S2 was factually fucking good however, and Ray is a god-tier character. The 4 of them were all pretty damn good really, except for Frank's writing at times. That's as honest as I can be about it.

You know what's odd, I've completely forgotten who the killer was in season 2. Now that I try recall in it, it wasn't terribly important to the whole shebang.
Frank getting edged out by Russians, what's his face getting knocked off by his gay army bros buddies, the whole ray arc, all of this seemed more important than the murder, which was all season uno was about.
That being said, I still really enjoyed season two, it was just a different story and style to tell.
I think season two just had to much going on, while season one was fairly direct.

It wasn't AS bad as people make it out to be, but it was nowhere even close to S1 in quality. If S1 was a 9/10, S2 would've been probably a 6/10.
Doesn't help that they needlessly killed off the decent characters so willy nilly just for the same of GoT tier 'shock' factor.
Also the actual plot was a fucking mess, I still don't know what the fuck it was about outside of each specific character's singular development.

it's a muddled mess with cringe-worthy dialogue at times, but it's not awful. there are some inspired moments throughout the season and more missteps than it should have for an HBO series. it really doesn't hold a candle to the first season in any capacity. Colin and Vince do their best and are effective most of the time. the only real faults harken to the screenplays and the less than inspired direction. seems like Pizzolatto really does need years to write an 8 episode series. doesn't really bode well for his inclusion in the Magnificent Seven remake, though.
