he couldve done 1 of 2 things
1-fight the faith, kill the fanatics, then watch as the peasants revolt against the crown for attacking the faith. the upper class all die, and the faith is now the defacto ruler of kings landing
2-ally with the faith, thus avoiding conflict and civil war. but also essentially giving the faith power over the crown, the high sparrow will now undoubtedly take seat on the high council and start inserting his own people into the red keep as protectors of the faith or some shit. and nobody will be able to do anything about it because he's gonna have the kings approval. to go against him is to go against the king.
