honestly i can't think of any great ones since LOTR. i guess it would have to be one of the harry potters.
willow and conan are excellent choices of course
Not counting animated.
>Before
Willow probably. Can't really think of many worthwhile fantasy movies. Hell can't think of many apart from LOTR that are worthwhile period, the fantasy movie genre has really been quite shared.

I wouldn't even really consider Black Death to be a "fantasy" film, just a medieval one, but it does have awitch who pulls part of her face off and casts a spell, so whatever.
I watched Excalibur for the first time probably last year and it's since become one of my favorite movies.

Ghibli studio animated LOTR, all the stuff from books.
Budget: 10^9 $

It would take to animate it as long as it did to write it. Probably longer
There are LITERALLY no good fantasy films besides Lord of the Rings (and by fantasy I mean medieval fantasy).
Had anyone saw The Labyrint with David Bowie,
I remember it as a kid, it was kinda dark fantasy?!

Fantasy is a horrible genre anyway
It's perfectly suited for children's novels and video games, but not in movies. They need something more than the same old fantasy tripes over and over and over again
This is why Warcraft will fail. We already know what it's about. Knights in shining armor and the orcish muh people in big trouble are going to overcome the bad guys in the end.

While I share many of these other posters' fear of them ruining LOTR, it honestly won't happen.
Thematically LOTR espouses what you might call 'Aryan' values, such as honor, courage and the will to resist invasion. If you tried to pick away everything good and wholesome from the trilogy in order to create a more 'progressive' version there would be practically nothing left.

These are values espoused by countless cultures you fucknut.
>>70410399
Not in ours. Not anymore.
Just take a look at the Warcraft movie. The entire point is that we shouldn't fight back the invading horde, but instead should forgive them every aggression and be best friends forever.
What sword and sorceries movies actually have a TON of sorcery instead of just 99% sword with 1% mage casting shitty spell and dieing in 1 hit to a sword?

Really none that comes to mind. I liked that Beowulf movie I guess, but other than that all we've been getting shitty adaptions of fantasy tween books.
Has /tv/ ever done a legit critical analysis into why the trifecta of fantasykino here is ALWAYS Conan Excalibur and LOTR? What qualities do those films have that put them so far above everything else?
>>70412121
Conan, at least, was written and directed by John Milius. It took our expectations of traditionalist sword and sorcery fiction so prevalent in the rest of the fantasy genre and gave it depth, meaning, and drive. The Riddle of Steel, while fairly simple, is still executed very well with regards to the main character's coming to understand it over the course of the film.
>>70412121
They're the only films that actually "got" it. The bombastic hyper masculinity of Conan, the honorable extravagance of Excalibur and the epicness of Lotr all get one thing in common, they're simplistic. Black and white themes, clear cut heroes and villains and deeply personal moments. It's all very easy to understand and deal with pretty basic human emotion, but the epic cinematography and scores raise them above and beyond.
Plus they're not catering to immaturity and modernity, so everything feels pretty alien. Star Wars got this down as well, great masculine simplicity. Very traditionalist films

>>70402171
this, but only tangerine dream version.
>>70403560
Why not? First 2 movies was pretty nice with comfy spirit of adventure and travel. A lot of great scenery and decorations. High fells of Rhudaur was a great moment.
>>70397554

Fuck the Tangerine Dream version, the pacing is shit and the score doesn't fit the film at all. It's supposed a dark fairy tale, not a 90 minute music video. It was literally forced on Ridley by the studio

Star Wars (1977)

Legitimately having a lot of trouble here. My first instinct was the first Pirates of the Caribbean film but that was released a couple of months before RotK.
Maybe the first Hellboy? Or if you're allowing animated films, then Howl's Moving Castle.
>>70405708
It's wizards, castles, princesses, magic and swords.
Sticking it in space doesn't change it from fantasy to sci-fi.
Space is a setting, not a genre.
