Everything that Evangelion is known for was done better 15 years earlier by the master Tomino. Anno is a huge fan of Tomino's. There is a reason for that. To me Tomino's greatest strength is writing complex characters and relationships. I think he is very observant and a good psychologist. Many people would laugh at this statement, of course, because his writing and directing style is very weird and they are just turned off by it.
Mobile Suit Gundam is pretty accessible though for the most parts. It's dragged down by the medium and the production and it's showing it's age but there is a lot of great things in if you look closely. It's not as basic as it might seem at first.
Ideon is kind of slow and repetitive but has a very nice and consistent dark psychological mood. Of course don't expect to be blown away. Tomino at his best is a show-not-tell kind of a director. Don't complain if he doesn't serve you everything on a silver platter. You'll have to work to enjoy his stuff but it's well worth it, I think.
