He got old and tired. It happens to most comedians, they do all the stuff they always wanted to do but sooner or later they get rich and old enough to start losing the love of comedy. When that happens and they realize there's nothing left to achieve in their chosen career they just start cruising. Sometimes they try to branch out and that sometimes has good results but I can't think of any who's really pulled off a complete transition.
