The point of DoFP was to send off the original cast, and set up a canon for the new trilogy cast to continue on without worrying about the cluster fuck of continuity they worked themselves into.

But it did advance the plot. Several times in fact. Storms character arc moved twice due to Mystique worship, saved Nightcrawler. And it was worldbuilding.
