It's not a vulnerability. It's a fucking exhaust port. The Death Star needs to vent shit into space. It needs a way to do that.
For the Rebellion, it was the only thing they could find to exploit on the exterior of the station. It was a long shot and would have failed without Luke having the Force.
If you listen to Wedge's dialogue, his targeting computer is only able to pick up the tower near the exhaust port. The port itself is too small for their computers to accurately hit (outside of the surface) with a proton torpedo.
Which is why Red Leader failed and Luke had to use the Force to destroy it.
It took, more or less, an act of God to exploit the "vulnerability"

People get the design of the exhaust port flaw wrong in their minds all the time, they think it was just as depicted on the holo-display, a straight tube all the way down to the center of the Death Star, e.g. obviously retarded. But that display was only for the benefit of the pilots so they understood their goal.
In reality the Death Star had thousands of exhaust ports (seriously, you think one tiny 2 meter hole is sufficient for a base the size of a moon?) The flaw in the design was that one specific port was connected to enough vital sectors near the surface that an explosion inside it would cause a chain reaction-- again, a chain reaction, near the surface, that would spread throughout the entire base as it built up power, not one big single explosion in the center of the base. So yes while the design was flawed, it was less "obvious big dumb tube leading to our doom" and more a clusterfuck of crossconnected power conduits in just the wrong configuration to be devastating. The Empire itself didn't know what the vulnerability was (they would have noticed "one big tube leading to the reactor", believe me), attributing further to its complexity.
