I am no reviewer, but I guess my first issue was with how vanilla it looked for De Palma film. He seems to be at his best with BIG EMOTIONS and melodrama, but there was none of that here (outside Connery's character) and these moments tend to come with great directing/visuals (end of Carlito's Way, Hartnett's character going back to ScarJo at the end of the Black Dahlia)

Oddly uninspired. Like a film you make to get more money to make a film you want. That was the only BDP film I hadn't watched.

Also nobody should give this man a gun.

Why is the Internet Film 'Critic' Community so against Inarritu?

Why can't you give him a fair, open chance?
>>
>>70377490
because he is sooooo ripping off tarkovsky, can't you just see it?
>>
>>70377490
i rather like BABEL and THE REVENANT but FCH put it best on Inarritu

he literally doesn't know how to shoot anything without putting it through his filter of "spiritual and beautiful", even when it would benefit the film to bring the direction more down to earth
>>
>>70377490
>FFollowing the atypically genre-derived but typically showboating Birdman, Alejandro González Iñárritu returns to something like old habits with The Revenant, a misery-fest that plants its narrative flags as carelessly as a Roland Emmerich blockbuster, guaranteeing us a viewing experience almost as arduous as the trials depicted on screen, before reaching a conclusion that's sealed the moment audiences first meet the key players.
http://www.slantmagazine.com/film/review/the-revenant-2015
>>
>>70377529
The first 15 minutes of the Revenant are easily 8/10 directing.
>>
>>70377517
In case nobody has seen it yet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpcdhNq_VPM
>>
me= cool guy that everyone wants to be friends with

you= gay and lame
>>
>>70377560
>After an obligatory false calm, The Revenant's proper opening scene is a show-stopping massacre at a fur-trapper's campsite. It's the kind of thing Howard Hawks would have handled—and did, in The Big Sky—in under 90 seconds, with mostly off-camera particulars and minimal effects, but González Iñárritu forces it to resemble the Normandy Beach sequence in Saving Private Ryan as much as history or sense will allow, and then some.
>>
>>70377490
Because the internet community has ADD
>>
>>70377560
i'm not saying Inarritu is bad at what he does, but he's like Michael Bay in that he only does one thing. Bay tries to make every shot as dynamic as possible, while Inarritu tries to make every shot as "spiritual/beautiful" as possible.
>>
>>70377490
Because The Revenant was completely vapid underneath all its pretty grit, and the beauty of the film had little to do with Inarritu

>>70377517
>>70377529
Right, and unlike his major influences of Malick and Tarkovsky, he has no actual spirituality to back up the borrowed images
>>
>>70377517
I actually cannot see it to the extent that he is supposedly 'ripping off' him. Influence is there, but so are influences from Malick. Does he appear bit of an airhead? Yes, but does he make pretty good films everyone can enjoy, yes.

>>70377595
Well put, I don't know if you are ironically pasting this or what, but I agree.

I think the directing later goes a bit down in the Revenant, but the start is sex.

This. He doesn't add that touch of himself and his own inner world like Malick and Tark do.

>>70377624
>Right, and unlike his major influences of Malick and Tarkovsky, he has no actual spirituality to back up the borrowed images
That's strange because Inarritu is a devout Catholic and Tarko/v/sky is a cultural Christian.

that's a literal meme propelled by the extreme cultural divide between japan and the average western society. you see, they have an extremely ritualistic, elegant approach to socialization. to the japanese, most heartfelt displays of emotion tend to be seen as scandalous. they stick to tradition: deference, politeness, extremely dogmatic rituals. add to that the cliched vision propagated by media of asian metropolis as technocratic utopias lacking in humanity and you have the full equation written down. beyond this facade there's a beating pulse as strong as any that of any westerner.

As a director, Inarritu doesn't even merit this amount of discussion. He makes well-crafted and pretty yet insubstantial films that flit from your mind a couple weeks after watching. I haven't found a legitimate reason yet to rewatch a Tarkovsky film in search of something I missed the first time around.

Ozu, on the other hand, is a different story. Charging Ozu films as cold and lacking humanity suggests inattention and clumsy interpretation on the viewer's behalf rather than a shortcoming of Ozu's. There's a reason why he's considered the premier humanist filmmaker, even moreso than Dreyer, Malick, and Peleshian. I refuse to believe any of his detractors in the last couple of threads have seen any of his films other than Tokyo Story.

A single word salad review from the likes of Josiah Morgan (who's favorite film 18 months ago was fucking Calvary) isn't going to change anyone's mind.

Guys be honest with me here. Is letterboxd the best way for me to go back and keep track of the movies I've watched in the last 30 years? I'm not interested in a community or whatever, just personal tracking of things I enjoyed. Is imdb better for this?

Sorry I've never used the site.

I didn't make the Ozu post and I'm not a liberal. De Palma made Untouchables so he could make Casualties of War. The takes are longer than ever, which I assume is an exercise for the visual design of Casualties. De Niro's performance and Morricone's score are a lot of fun and the station shoot out is a perfect action scene, but I agree that overall it isn't really a good movie.

It's not me responding to any replies to this post and please watch Bed and Board.

Hey saikol :-D
>>
>>70377350
Not the anon you responded to, but whether or not you agree with him, that post was extremely well-written. It expressed a lot of deep points in a concise manner, that hints towards a lot of knowledge of different topics. I only saw a handful of Japanese films but I can see exactly where he's coming from. Besides, the way he got the kid whose review he commented on to contradict himself so embarrassingly is comedy gold.
Not sure why I'm joining this argument
>>
>>70380636
ugh that is just horribly racist.
>>
Does anyone else plan their films watching out? I have a list and calendar dates to watch them. I'm hoping from genre to genre but I have the next 50 days planned out. And I don't mean a backlog, I mean an actual plan.
>>
>>70380632
>Morricone's score are a lot of fun
really? It felt like rehashed stuff from Once Upon A Time In America and other scores I've heard from him. He appears to be much like Hans Zimmer where is known for a few films and rest is pretty much repeat and rehashing.
>>
>>70380768
thats insane
thats something an insane person would do
>>
>>70380733
yeah, AND sexist
>>
>>70380788
Even if so, Morricone ripping off himself is better than anything someone like Zimmer could ever dream of. And usually, the best part of an otherwise decent or mediocre film, was his score, elevating the works.

there's nothing to refute. have you ever been to college? basic logic? he has a thesis: japanese people somehow have inferior emotional range and can't connect to numinousness (whatever that is). it's a speculative claim with zero support. you can try to web some absurd dialetics where somehow your myopic vision of a race you know nothing about is objective reality and use it as fuel to the rant, but anyone with half a brain and no ulterior motive won't buy it. the writing is certainly above the average 4chan post, but the thinking behind it makes it an elaborate shitpost. it's fallacious, circular logic

Numinousness is an abomination of a word. The term is numinous, or the numinous. One does not "connect to numinousness". That is nonsense. That is also the worst definition I have either read. Time to crack the books, friend. Wouldn't want your college education to go to waste!
