I found that quick description of that legion to be on of the most enthralling passages in the book.
Supervolcano, nuclear holocaust and metoer strike all make a lot of sense. Everything in the book and movie could be explained by all of these.

It's a great ending either way and this is an example why. There's a lot to both sides of the coin and one could argue it either way.
