>Some crew initially heard J.J. Abrams was supervising the reshoots.

>Gareth Edwards is doing the reshoots himself but with a partner, Christopher McQuarrie.

>Christopher McQuarrie, the final writer on Rogue One will be working extensively with Edwards onset to make sure they’re on the “same page” with the most recent draft of the film.

>Christopher McQuarrie’s draft of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was considered superior to the film they shot previously.

>It was not Edwards’ fault as McQuarrie’s draft wasn’t completed when much of the film was shot and revisions kept coming in that made the film feel uneven.

>32 sets have been recreated for the reshoot.

>The crew expects they are reshooting 40% of the film.

>They are working 6 days a week for 8 weeks.

Yeah but then you look at flicks like Thor 2, Iron Man 3 and they are regarded as shit movies even by the fans.

If Star Wars movies flop critically, it can damage the IP. And that`s what they want to avoid.
>>
>>70358244

Worse than Phatom Menace?

>>70358111
sounds like a lot of bullshit rumors to me, apart from the length of reshoots. i also call into question a script for a film of this magnitude and by this completely hands on company was not finished months before shooting began. that's not how the mouse does things. i have worked on Disney co-productions with a tenth of the budget of a Star Wars film and EVERYTHING they do is run through committee before it's greenlit.
>>
>>70358441
Yeah, but Hollywood execs are also notoriously reactionary.

In the past couple months, we've seen an over hyped juggernaut of a comic book movie with a dark, brooding tone barely break even. At the same time, we saw a small, under-hyped, but light-hearted comic movie shatter box office expectations.

Concurrently, Alice II just shit the bed, The Good Dinosaur flopped, and compared to Deadpool, you could argue that Civil War has underperformed. Hell, I'd even argue that TFA underperformed seeing as it how they clearly went into it looking to beat Avatar and came out barely able to beat Titanic in terms of overall grosses. It was still a massive hit, but in that light, it may well have left hundreds of millions (or billions) on the table in the eyes of Disney execs.

In this era of ever-increasingly big budgets and marketing campaigns, a flop and an under-performer can leave you hundreds of millions in the hole and negate the box office returns of 2 or 3 hits.

Now with all signs pointing to Warcraft and Apocalypse underperforming, it's looking to be another cool year at the box office, and fans may be finally growing tired of more capeshit, which likely has Disney scared shitless, since Marvel is their cash cow. The lustre also seems to have faded from Pixar, and the days of their films being reliable blockbusters died back in 2010 or so.

So in that light, Star Wars is their only "fresh" IP, and I would not at all be surprised if, in the eyes of Disney's execs, Rogue One absolutely cannot fail.

So it makes sense that they might be doing panicked last minute re-tools of it, all in the hopes of catching just one or two more potential audience demographics.
>>
Hopefully this will get Disney to reconsider yearly Star Wars releases. Definitely grasping at straws there.

Did any nonmemer really believe BvS was going to be good? I mean just look at the trailers and the title, it was destined to be derpy af. I went in knowing that and it's probably why i enjoyed it for what it was.

Rogue honestly looks like another BvS. Silly premise, looks shallow, and people hyping it for some reason. If execs can see that then it's smart of them to want to avoid that, though whether they're successful is another story.

Also, Inside Out was good
>>
>>70358920
whether this is an original response or not, it doesn't address the main point i made. no way the screenplay was not finished months ahead of the shoot. yes, apparently Disney is reshooting a lot of of new footage, but no way the film began shooting without an approved screenplay.
>>
>reshooting 40% of the movie

>>
>>70359449
>40% reshoots

>>
>>70359876
Its aesthetic would look fucking phenomenal on the big screen.

Cast a 30-something heartthrob Ryan Gosling-type (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau?) as Alan, a short, brooding Andrew Garfield/Kit Harrington type as Van, and the next JLaw/Shaline Woodley/Saoirse Ronan/Emma Roberts as a whitewashed Hitomi, with the runner-up as Merle.

Instant succes, if the script was halfway decent.
>>
>>70358111
Hasn't been such extensive reshooting since Superman II
>>
>>70360004
Oh, I'm sure it was approved, and I'm sure the execs shit themselves after seeing BvS tank in face of the script they approved.

Yeah, when the most "exciting" films on their upcoming roster are sequels, you know the magic is gone.

But, like Amblin in the 80s and early 90s, from 1996-2010, Pixar was utterly untouchable. They had a good run, for sure.

And inside out would have been ranked down with Monsters, Inc. and A Bug's Life if it were released in the 2000s, and you know it.

Actually, most of the reshoots are focused on redoing action sequences to be less scary, primarily a Saving Private Ryan in space sequence and a sequence at night where Vader takes out a group of rebels slasher movie style.

I would reckon that between the budget and the media-saturation promos, Civil What's break-even point was likely at or near $750 million. As the de facto to 3rd Avengers movie, and as a movie that got far, far better reviews than AoU, they were likely hoping for a combined worldwide gross in the $1.5-1.6 billion range that Jurassic World and Furious 7 grossed on far lower budgets. If it tops out at ~$1.2b, that's still leaving $300-400 million in profits on the table that Disney may well have been planning for.

In the blockbuster world, a $400m net on a $750m investment is still a fairly "meh" box office reception, on the same level as a $75m movie only grossing $120m.

As for TFA, increase the initial investment to $800+ million, if not a billion even, and then add in the $4 Billion dollars that Disney spent on acquiring Lucasfilm, Ltd., and now, even that gross "profit" of $1.6 billion starts to feel a little underwhelming when you realize that TFA will likely be their top-grossing Star Wars film and they were probably hoping that it would return Avatar numbers and bring home $2b+ in gross profits.

Rogue One looks like a SW version of Fury. That's why Disney is pissed. Disney is catering to the whimsical fun of the OT (mostly lighthearted adventure with minimal dark themes) just how TFA delivered. Rogue was just too bleak and dull. TFA underperform my ass. All movies today in general underperformed. TFA did great in comparison. The thing is there hadn't been a SW film in 10 years that's why. Too much capeshit is ruining the franchise. Deadpool did great because it was Rated R. People are getting capeshit fatigue. That's why studios are investing in vidya game films like Warcraft and Ass Creed because they don't know how to make original blockbusters anymore. Disney is smart. Competing studios making capeshit films is too many. Only Disney can do Star Wars but if they oversaturate the series with too many spinoffs it won't be a money maker anymore. I think Disney knows SW is limited too so they will oversaturate it until it dies. I mean how many times can you shoot lasers and swing lightsabers for fuck's sake

God the movie sounds so shitty.

The designer purposely left the vulnerability in the Death Star? Fuck you. They're defeating all dread and meaning to the death star now. Fuuuck.
>>
>>70364616
This, as proven by:
>>70363168

Now I thought Godzilla 14 was mostly a snoozefest, but my god did it have me on the edge of my seat feeling this pervasive sense of dread at the thought of what I knew I was about to see.

Any of the sequences early on involving the nuclear plant, the MUTO attack on the nuke train, and the buildup to that last-ditch HALO jump into a MUTO-ravaged San Francisco were spooky as all hell, and were easily the best parts of the film. I would go so far as to say that they were legitimately scarier than anything that has appeared in a Japanese Godzilla film so far, INCLUDING 1954 and 1984.

Now, that sort of edge-of-your seat sense of body-pervading dread as we know we are about to see awful things happen and the raw horror of death and destruction might be tonally PERFECT for a classic-styled Kaiju movie.

But even I (someone who HATED TFA and is desperate to see something different come from the Star Wars franchise) can admit that the exact sorts of scenes and emotions that Gareth Edwards is fucking fantastic at capturing on film might be completely inappropriate in any Star Wars film.

Now, Darth Vader appearing from the shadows to massacre the heroes in a stomach-turningly dread-inducing scene that could be scored with Györgi Ligeti's "Requiem" in the trailer might sound "cool" at first (I know I think it could be fucking amazing to see), but I can also see where cooler heads may see a scene like that where our favorite cybernetic sith lord unleashes a horrific beatdown that Ser Gregor Clegane could be proud of might be a TAAAAD inappropriate for a film set in the same universe that contained C-3PO, Yoda, and the Ewoks.

You're talking about a character who unhesitatingly killed defenceless children in Revenge of the Sith, and who is consistently ranked the greatest villain in movie history. Seeing Vader going full Clegane on a group of rebels would be one of the best moments in Star Wars history.
>>
>>70365919
I know, I made the mistake of typing all that before I read all the Reddit spoilers.

Vader going full Mountain vs Martell on a bunch of hardcore mercenaries could be a fucking pinnacle sequence for the franchise.

I take back everything I said, R1 as Gareth shot it sounds fucking bleak as all hell, the hollow victory "Seven Samurai in Space" that I think Lucas himself deep down inside wanted to make when he started writing Episode I, before he talked himself into adding kid Anakin, Jar-Jar, etc.

So yeah, I was wrong.

Bring on Clegane Vader.

Is the TFA honeymoon phase over so soon?
>>
Hi everyone
Let me bleed past the damage control

Christopher McQuarrie has been shadow directing this since 3/4s through the original shoot.

Gareth Edwards is only present on set because the director's guild requires it.

None of the 40% theyre reshooting is the 25% McQuarrie was in charge of. Coincidence?

Edwards is done in Hollywood. Not quite Tranked since Disney kept the onset disaster leaks very quiet (the news of McQuarrie ""touching up"" the script was barely reported on).

Its very sad. Another victim of this idea of plucking a little indie guy and giving a producer-governed 175 million dollar flick then watching him fall apart.

I would imagine that today, where you're basically just dealing with Hasbro (and sorta Mattel), that there is much less money to be made from toys than there was in the 1980s, when you had over a half dozen major toy companies jockeying against each other, all willing to cut killer deals with you to get your sweet, sweet IP.

It's kind of like what the EA/Activision duopoly has done for gaming.
>>

>>
>>70358920
>Hell, I'd even argue that TFA underperformed seeing as it how they clearly went into it looking to beat Avatar and came out barely able to beat Titanic in terms of overall grosses. It was still a massive hit, but in that light, it may well have left hundreds of millions (or billions) on the table in the eyes of Disney execs.
I've been saying this for months.
Considering how big star wars is I believe execs expected TFA to make at least 3billion, probably 4.

Maybe if hollywood execs would let creative people do their jobs adn tell proper stories instead of monkeying with the process through endless script rewrites and editing and reedtiting films to the point of incoherence.

But I guess hollywood isn't in the story business anymore due to the fact that the largest paying consumers of movies don't speak english so it doesn't matter anyway.

The reason that movies are formulaic pieces of shit is that thanks to the death of the home video market and Hollywood's apparent inability to control expenses nobody is willing to take chances on something unproven. Therfore you get soulless crap made by bean counters who don't even like movies.

>But I guess hollywood isn't in the story business anymore due to the fact that the largest paying consumers of movies don't speak english so it doesn't matter anyway.

You just hit the nail on the head. The formulaic blandness of the MCU, TFA, and plenty of other recent movies (the Alice in Wonderland 3D BS comes to mind) has far less to do with the gradual worsening of American tastes than you might think, and much more to do with the utter lack of taste that the 3rd world international market tends to have.

The studios have realized that the REAL money is made when you dub the film into Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, or Hindi, and open yourself up to the billions of 3rd-world rubes out there who are too stupid to understand (or care about) proper storytelling, but sure do love to see explosions, mindless action, and other flashy "Hollywood" shit on the big screen.

Add in the fact that certain storylines and characterizations might fall flat or be offensive to "international" audiences (if the jist of it even makes it through translation), or run afoul of censors/ratings boards, and you now understand why most every blockbuster since Bayformers/POTC or so (some of the first movies to score BIG internationally) has been such homogenized tripe.

Disney is ESPECIALLY guilty of this, which is why ever since Pirates, every single one of their live-action tentpole releases has followed the same time-honed formula of "bland, committee-approved, no-real-stakes storyline carried by light-hearted quippy dialogue, liberally peppered with fan service, and structured around 2 or 3 large-scale action set pieces with enough flashy, compelling visuals to distract the audience how otherwise forgettable the movie actually is.

The Pirates movies followed this formula.
The MCU follows this formula.
And now, Star Wars follows this formula.

Pity to Gareth Edwards for thinking otherwise.

Tons of major red flags in this movie:

1. "It's a rebellion, I rebel." The most cringe worthy line in Star Wars history. Literally smacks of everything we were afraid of when Disney took over.

2. Main character is a total, unpleasant, unlikable cunt.

3. 90 pound girl karate chopping armored stormtroopers. I'm all for tough heroines but this is so bad it insults your intelligence.

4. Gareth Edwards. He made that shit Godzilla movie and his films are terrible.

5. The writers. They've both produced nothing but shit.

6. The Death Star... AGAIN. With this film we have 8 Star Wars movies and the Death Star is mentioned or seen in 6 of them.

7. Yet another Mary Sue lead that will alienate everyone except for self hating men, gays and teenage girls.

And that's just for starters.
