In the late 1960s, Sobel shot himself in the head with a small-caliber pistol.[9] The bullet entered his left temple, passed behind his eyes, and exited out the other side of his head. This severed his optic nerves and left him blind.[9] He was later moved to a VA assisted living facility in Waukegan, Illinois. Sobel resided there for his last seventeen years until his death due to malnutrition on September 30, 1987.[9] No services were held for Sobel after his death.[9]

Back in junior high our principal was a retired air force captain, even though he was nothing like Sobel, I think he was going for the same approach (giving us a really hard time so we would be "better prepared"). He had some bizarre requests, like we would have to memorize songs for the music classes and he made the girls curtsy to him (this was back in 1997 or so) and critiqued them harshly if they did it wrong. I still absolutely hate his guts, he was an unreasonable asshole. Giving your subordinates or pupils a hard time just makes them want to piss on your grave. I imagine easy company felt the same about Sobel.

Some of the guys from E company, while not wanting him to lead them in battle, credit his harsh training for getting them through the war. The guy couldn't read a map, and had zero tactical sense, but at least they were better prepared when someone else took over.

You do know that drill instructors should be obnoxious , and since EZ company had such high survival rate(all things considering, they were in almost all suicidal missions) he did something right.

in that aspect he was perfect.

>>
>>70308827
Ok you are just being dumb for no reason.

The sniper would have been able to tell he had the symbol on his helmet even if he didn't go stand out in the open.

THEREFORE

Him going out in the open didn't OUT him as an officer. They clearly would have been able to see he was way before. It simply made him an easier target since he wasn't moving. Shooting a moving target is considerably harder than a non-moving target, specifically if you are aiming at the head (which the sniper was). Him even turning caused the sniper to miss a bit.

Use some fucking critical thinking next time and get your ass off your high horse you dumbfuck.

>>
>>70308154
you dont know how snipers work in real life.(in this example it was obvious it was officer so he took him out, usually they just wound first one)
First you shoot someone who is at total front of colone, then you shoot at someone who is all the way in the back(that way you make whole platoon in dissaray ), then, depends on situation, you either relocate while they are trying to get a hold of first shock and then you wound ones who try to rescue first victims.

its one of the oldest tactics in the books, first, last,2nd first,2nd last, relocate, rinse ,repeat until almighty US sniper hits you right in the eye tru scope.
>>
>>70309000
All before stepping forward. Amazing.

The airborne also covered up their badges that signaled they were an elite force as well during Operation Market Garden.

>>70308998
typically, but if presented with a super obvious target not moving and out in the open with no other combat distractions odds are the sniper was thinking "Lol what is this idiot doing" and "BOOM! HEADSHOT TIME"
>>
>>70308408

In the novel, lots of the men say that despite Sobel being a colossal cunt and a terrible CO under fire, the reason Easy performed so well under fire was the training they received from Sobel. Shame they don't really touch on it in the TV series.
>>
>>70309089
This - My great uncle served in the pacific, and while out on the islands that have not been fully captured they were under orders never to salute the officers, as otherwise their officers would get shot by a sniper, and officers had to keep their binoculars hidden.
>>
>>70309089
> openly used binos in that position
I don't get it why the fuck are you idiots being so dense about this?

The binoculars and being upfront are not the only thing that gives off your rank. The fact he had it on his FUCKING HELMET would be a larger factor that they would have seen before he even stepped up.

What is so god damn hard to understand about that?

Probably not. In fact, almost certainly not, considering the officer clearly got hit in the chest, and the likelihood of missing is increased hugely when you aim for the head.

And, since you actually follow mortar team in TP, you never see the front lines as you should.

Honestly I highly doubt Sobel's training had much to do with it.

Every single one of them would have followed Winter's orders no matter how dangerous they were. They all trusted him as an extremely competent tactical commander. I mean, training and physical fitness is important but I'm pretty sure having a brilliant leader is more important, Sobel trained them harder but probably not so crazily different than other airborne soldiers.

What E Company had was one amazing Dick.

I would attribute their survival more to winters than sobels training. I'm sure any company under winters command would have done just as well as easy.

Which was the whole point of Dike. To show how a shitty leader will get everyone killed.

I just don't see how Sobel's training is the factor in their survival at all. The Airborne already had extremely tough training.

On 10 December 1967, while on active duty in Germany, Blithe felt nauseated when he returned from a weekend at Bastogne, Belgium, where he had taken part in the ceremonies commemorating the Battle of the Bulge. On 11 December 1967 Blithe was taken to the emergency room at Wiesbaden Hospital, Germany, where he was admitted with a diagnosis of a perforated ulcer. He died in the intensive care unit, on 17 December 1967 after surgery, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors.[7]
In the mini-series and the book it incorrectly states that Blithe died December 17, 1948, due to never fully recovering from his injury (bullet to the neck).
Fellow Easy Company Currahee veterans interviewed while writing the book and mini-series had believed that Blithe was wounded in the neck, and that he did not recover and as such Ambrose's book stated that Blithe had died in Philadelphia in 1948. This carried over into episode 3, "Carentan," which ends with a slide stating that "Albert Blithe never recovered from the wounds he received in Normandy. He died in 1948." Though his family publicly corrected this error, not all editions of the book, or of the series, have the correction.

I'm just sainyg, IN MY OPINION, their training would have been pretty fucking good already in the airborne and it was their leader that really got them through the toughest battles. Their fitness meant fuck all when Dike took command.

in real life

Dike received his law degree from Yale Law School in 1947, became a member of the New York Bar in 1949 and the District of Columbia Bar in 1954. From 1950–1953, he was a U.S. Commissioner in Japan. He also worked for the Central Intelligence Agency from 1951–1953. He then practiced law in New York City and in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the legal fraternity Phi Delta Phi.[20]
In 1954, Dike moved to New Mexico to prospect for uranium.[21] He was an officer of the U.S. Uranium Company, United Western Minerals Company and other oil and mining interests in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Las Vegas, Nevada.[1] On 12 March 1957, Dike wed Catherine Pochon; his residences were listed as Thompson, Connecticut, and Santa Fe.[22] In October 1958 Dike was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Theodore Roosevelt Association. He visited to Thompson, Connecticut and Providence in November 1958. In 1959, Dike, his wife and baby left Santa Fe for Switzerland; it was his intention to study at the International School of Law at The Hague. Dike resigned his positions as vice president and comptroller of United Western Minerals Company in Santa Fe but continued as a director.[23] By 1959, he had established a law practice in Lausanne, Switzerland.[24] In 1960, Dike became a permanent resident of Switzerland.[1]
Dike died in Rolle, Switzerland, on 23 June 1989 after a long illness. He was survived by his two daughters, his son, and two grandchildren

>>
>>70310537
It all just seemed kinda light as it only affected a couple of the main characters. Buck and Malarke were the only ones to have any sort of PTSD.

The pacific was literally everyone. Soldiers turning into soulless killing machines with no regard for life in every episode.

BoB seemed so much more... hopeful. Like "Yea, we are gonna win this and go home!" in The Pacific it was all "Were going to die here covered in maggots and shit aren't we?" with all the characters being tragically effected by the horrors of war.
>>
>>70310537
This. And this was how it should have been done.

With The Pacific it did show how souls destroying and monstrous it was but that shit just ultimately made the series kinda boring.

I didn't like The Pacific as much as I did Band of Brothers the first time I saw it but on multiple viewings it's easily my favorite.

Those guys had it fucking ROUGH even compared to Easy. On the far edges of the world no where close to society fighting a radical enemy that was indoctrinated to believe their leader was a god. An enemy that would fight to the very last man and wouldn't think twice about running into gunfire in suicidal charges.

Why is it so boring? It showed that even despite those horrors the marines were able to do their jobs and how a marine would do anything to fight for the man next to him.

It had a lot more character development. It had fresh, idealized young men interacting with the already hardened vets. it showcased how terrible the environment was and how it was just as much an enemy as the Japs were.

The big difference in The Pacific was just how different the enemy was. In BoB the germans are just other white guys living in cities and towns similar to the ones Easy company came from.

In the Pacific everything was completely alien to the Marines. The jungles, the Japaense, and even Japans tactics using in battle. It creates a completely different atmosphere and you could see just how these Marines would lose their connection to the world and their humanity.

>>
>>70310892
It just had to be. They were fighting on islands completely burned to ash and rock. No signs of life anywhere but from the little burrows the japs would pop up from. No water, no trees for cover hot humid temperature... just razor edged rocks covered in ash and blood. The marines didn't get weekend passes to go visit Paris and fuck bitches. They would just go to some other shitty little island where disease tried to kill you and crabs trying to pinch your balls when you took a shit. Nearly every Marine in the pacific had dysentery, malnutrition, and dehydration.

Being in the Navy wouldn't be much better. Tight quarters with little access to sunlight. Just metal cans that echoed the sounds of cannon fire. My neighbor is like.. 96 years old at this point and was in the Navy during ww2. He had lost most of his hearing just from their own guns. He doesn't like to talk about it all that much so I have no idea what exactly he had been through but it couldn't have been good,

That's kind of the point. 10 minutes of shooting and hours of waiting around. BoB feels like a melancholy patriotic series about the Greatest Generation. The Pacific felt like the Generation Kill of WW2. All the heroes get gunned down because they were still regular people in horrible situations. Their Speirs gets sniped and Ack Ack is just like Winters and he gets blasted by a sniper. There's a few tears but they have to move on. Then we see civilians get massacred. None of it was suppose to make you go "whoa that was awesome" like Spiers running across the field.

Even Snapfu breaks seeing the booby trapped babies and the Imps using civilians as shields.

First, because he could. Second, because thieves should be strung up by the neck and hung until dead.

The hardest part about being in the military is weeding out all the shit-bags that they allow in, graduate from basic moron training, and ship to a line unit where they become a liability to morale, cohesion, and the effectiveness of the unit.

How? It was never over the top with it's representation of war and it's effects. I can't think of a single scene where I went "oh come on really?"

Their mutual hatred for Sobel formed a strong bond within their platoons and company, and when you have a cohesive team that is physically and mentally tough, then you've got a pretty bad ass organization.

This is why chicks and faggots have been excluded from military and combat organizations in every decent military, because they fuck up that cohesion, which makes the unit WORSE.

>>
>>70314670
See, the part that makes me think sobel wasn't the biggest influence on their survival is the fact after a few weeks of D-Day most of Easy was replacements. Seeing how the army mixes recruits with more the vets means they weren't fighting along with the same people they had training with for 90% of their war.

So their "Band of Brothers" connections wouldn't have been with the Sobel trainees but between whoever they were fighting with in their unit.

That's why I believe Winters wasn't a much larger influence on Easy's performance than Sobel.
>>
>>70315149
You just gotta REALLY look the part though. I'm not fat but I'm not exactly fit either. If I beef up some I could probably pull it off.

How many kills did the men get vs. the bitches?

It's not hard shooting idiots that ignore cover and concealment with a scoped rifle.

Regardless, females are anchors in any unit and slow the men down, and they initiate a biological drive in men that doesn't exist between normal men, this leads to the division of men against themselves due to the fact that some will try to fuck them, others will try to white knight for them (like you), and still others will resent them for the negative impact they have on the unit.

Chicks are a joke.

>See: Ancient Greece

You mean the guys that earned their reputation fighting the same losers that have gotten their asses kicked by EVERY western army ever fielded against them? The guys that lost to the Romans, who in turn got THEIR asses kicked by ze Germans?
