If someone risks their life because they know if they fail and die they'll live forever in a better world anyway, that's not very selfless or sacrificial at all, now is it? Risking your life with the knowledge that dying means literally losing everything and ceasing to exist is a far more heroic ideal.

You're stupid. Unless someone claims a religion or a god belief you should just assume they have none. And there are plenty of characters who don't ever mention religion, gods, or spirituality.
The real problem is the shitty portrayal of skepticism in movies. How many times do you see a movie with a skeptical character at the start who demands evidence for the fantastical/magical claims of the other characters, and then when he's shown proof he says, "I should have believed you all along!" No, you shouldn't have. You should have believed them the moment they could prove it and not a moment sooner. The message they send to people is, "Stop asking for evidence, stop doubting people, just take everything anyone says on faith as 100% true and stop being such a buzzkill!"
