The space flight parts are OK but not great. The connection between him and his daughter, and the idea that spirit of human love existing beyond the boundaries of time and space, is what makes the movie great. If you take that away its just another terrible pop sci-fi

that was the dumbest part of the movie. Space flight transfers between bodies involve LOTS of math. Imagine a line extending from a point at your feet extending 100 miles. If you change the angle by .01 degrees it will move the end point of the line by a huge distance. Now imagine if the line were 100 million miles long and consider how precise the angle of approach would have to be to have any control over where you end up.
I loved this movie, but it wasn't because of the super-realism that retards think it depicts. The robot assistant's design and the O'Neil colony were probably the most plausible hard sci-fi elements.

It has big square feet. If pic related can stand upright and walk around by modeling the complexity of human legs and balance mechanisms than an elaborate sidewalk sign staying upright shouldn't be a problem. The aspect I thought was most interesting was the way that it could reconfigure itself into various shapes, such as when it turns into a wheel to rescue cat woman from her feelings, or when it uses its limbs to brace itself and the unrestrained cat woman in the ship. It seemed like a more plausible design from an actual engineer than the usual humanoid robots, more versatile and much simpler to implement than humanoid bipedalism.

No, a monopod like pic related is the most inherently unstable structure, but stability is not determined by the number of legs something has. If a monopod has a wide, heavy base like pic related then it will be quite stable. TARS/CASE would be heavier at the bottom than at the top, and would likely have some kind of internal counterweight balancing system, like weights that can move along its vertical axis and also along the axle arond which the major segments turn.
