Yeah that's my opinion as well. She was a good villain in S1-2 and had an interesting arc for S3, then she became an annoying Deus Ex Machina in S4 (I really don't care much for S4 overall, although the ending looks like it will be worth the setup), but she really grew on me as a main character in S5RIP Root.
My opinion of Shaw is the complete opposite, where I really liked her in S2, but in S3-4 I started liking her less and less (I think she went through a character rewrite but I'm not completely sure).

that's probably what gave me a boner about this series. instead of it being another in the million procedural cop dramas it took the idea of a super intelligent AI and the problems surrounding it. not to mention the ethics of being spied on and having that data become part of a pre-crime software that can potentially save your life.

Tbh I never really liked Reese that much. 2breathy4me, and I'm still haunted by "the bodega" that was repeated ad nauseum in a few eps in S2 or 3.
I only watched it for Root and Shaw (but still enjoyed the rest, like the mostly spot-on computer science stuff). And from that perpsective, I feel like I'm not pandered to enough, and Root's way to go was crap, because she was raving like mad about "muh Sameen" (the amount of actual saving her was also uneven as hell between the episodes) for a fucking year and then the show went "nope, you want to become one with the machine".

It does hit a little close with those themes. Hell, Hitachi developed a similar system for police forces to predict crime from social media. Combined with the lack of filter people have online, it's pretty fucking scary to think about the future.

i'm being hopeful too... remember she had some plan with The Machine regarding that missle a few eps back? Then the little thing she spoke about to Harold about adding something to TM to help in their fight.
I can see her taking this opportunity to fake her death (maybe just have Lionel see the body was enough) while she works on a little plan to help the group.
But then, also, this makes sense for her that she'd die for all of them... bah I dunno.
My theory is that in BSOD (the first episode of season 5) where we heard Root's voice is really the machine, and she's talking to Blackwell, who has now taken on John's role since John, Finch, and Shaw are now dead.
Again, just a theory. It wouldn't make sense to stick with Blackwell just to be a "lol randum xD bad guy", this show is too smart for that. Blackwell is going to serve a bigger role, every recurring character has. We already know Blackwell feels conflicted in what he's doing and it's obvious he questions Samaritan's motives. It would almost be like Reese, who killed people before Finch met him, if Blackwell decided to start saving people.
Also, is it me, or does Blackwell's actor look a lot like Troy Baker?

I would feel a bit stung if Blackwell gets a redemption arc... though in some way, we've seen how he's not 100% okay with Samaritan's plans.
I think it might upset fans though if he of all people takes up the mantle, but again, it could work.

Maybethe Root that was driving was not the real Root. That would be on par with some of the sillier shit this show has pulled. There's easily a dozen asspulls they could come up with if they wanted to bring back Root.
And with the machine (currently) using her voice, she's still in the cast. Usually when a character dies in a show, the actor leaves. (that has become an overused trope in Bones)

I think thatit really was her...that way it wouldn't cheapen her last moments with Shaw and Finch both. But I am holding onto hope that, being clever as she is, she saw this as an opportunity to take her out of the equation and faking her death, so that Samaritan and its agents wouldn;t take her into account anymore.
That way, she can operate helping the team with whatever it is her plan was with The Machine a few eps back.
Again, just wishful thinking really on my part...on one hand I'm glad the show has the balls to do something like this so close to the finale, but on the other, I want more from that character. I can't help it

Am I the only one who thinks Season 5, with the addition of this latest episode, is one of the best seasons of POI, albeit small? I see a lot of people shitting on S5 and I have no idea why. S4 was much worse.
Also, disregarding the Root monologues that were a necessary farewell to her character, the rest of this episode was a masterpiece.

I thought a few of the episodes of Season 5 were unnecessary filler (thanks CBS) albeit with some fun bits, and it annoys me how much place they gave the Root Shaw romance. However, the good episodes along with the series finale might completely redeem it (and Root was really cool this season).
I also found Season 4 somewhat frustrating to watch. What they did following Season 3's finale was mostly dull and disappointing, and it felt like the main cast were being railroaded hard by the machine.
