He definitely wasn't given anything to work with, but this kid also had a role in Cowboys vs Aliens, or something of that nature, and I don't recall him being spectacular in that abomination of a film either.
A Goku or an Aang has to be literally able to carry an epic of a franchise that would no doubt encompass several movies, and perhaps many more spin offs.

There was a trailer of a pretty buff guy playing a convincing Goku in what I believe was a CGI rendered background of the location Vegeta and Goku fight for the first time.
They're out there for sure, they just don't seem to get the roles, I'm sure it doesn't help that the few buff asian characters in media when adapted are typically played by white or racially ambiguous guys.

Harry Potter is only ever an adolescent and teenager throughout the films though besides a short period of time in the end of the last one where he's made up to look like an adult, although Daniel Radcliffe's youthful appearance betrays him much more than that of Ronald Weasley's.
Goku has to already be capable of at least looking like he has some rudimentary understanding of martial arts to begin with, and grow into a handsome leader of the Z fighters.

The humor is what is great about it, especially the way that Goku is fighting normal people, so his crazy abilities really stand out and blow people's minds. Same reason the tournament arcs are my favorite in DBZ: there are actually normal people around so their power levels becomes comical relative to everyone else (hated Cell games Satan, but loved him during the last tournament/Buu saga).
Penguin Village is probably my favorite part of all of Dragon Ball, and I wish they would sub all of Dr. Slump. I also loved Battle of Gods because it went back to the old school humor (Kid trunks trying to hook up with not-really-a-kid Mai was better than pretty much anything that happens in DBZ).

This post is spot on, I never really appreciated supporting characters like Oolong, Yamcha, and Master Roshi after Goku defeats Piccolo. In fact even, especially, Krillin's personality change shifted the style of show that Dragonball actually was.
For the better as far as Akira is concerned, I'm sure even though it's not as funny he's now laughing all the way to the bank having made the right decision.
I also like the fact Goku was underestimated by practically every villain he came across due to the fact he looked so much younger and less powerful than he actually was.
