He's one of the only characters so far this season who hasn't been hypocritical at all, refuses to be pushed around by the nobles, and sticks to his principles no matter what happens. People are so jaded by Game of Thrones' (and most modern shows') attitude that truly strong and decent people never exist in the real world that they cry hypocrisy where there's none to be found.
I agree that most people in positions of power who seem to be good are hiding something, but this series has beaten that point into the ground so much that it would be more interesting to have a character who's actually genuine.
