"Prequels" is also a pretty broad generalization. Ian McDiarmid was in each one, and he was great. Some actors were good, but only for one movie. I liked Temuera Morrison, Liam Neeson (even though he had to play a pretty generic guy), even the small role Lee got he did good.

He sucked at delivering the lines because the script was pure shit. Natalie Portman sucked just as much, if not more, but she didn't get shat on half as much because she wasn't playing "muh vader". He has potential but he's not "The One" like Rey. He's a bit of a coward, but his bravery grows as the film progresses.
He could have fled and ran off into the far reaches of the galaxy, but he chose to stand by Rey and join the fight. Plus anyone who fights Tr8r in one on one melee combat has to brave.
Rey didn't need character growth, she was already the perfect hero archetype. Competent, brave, and exceptionally smart. Her lack of any real weaknesses make her boring.
