Has any newly emerged filmmaker given the keys to a big budget franchise ever done well commercially or critically?
>David Lynch and Dune
>David Fincher and Alien 3
>Duncan Jones with Warcraft
>Trank with Fan4stic

And I mean a pre-established franchise or media property. Obviously director's with surprise hits like Cameron don't count, even if his first WAS Piranha II.

Stephen Hopkins did a decent job with Predator 2 and Nightmare on Elms street 5, which were his first two movies after getting into directing

cameron was already strongly established by terminator when he got aliens.

isn't it the only new, non-local thing in eu theaters right now?

His first huge hit was Terminator, which is why I didn't count it. I'd say that is bigger than Moon, or Eraserhead in terms of appeal. But he did blow it out of the water with Aliens, of course.
