The director was a fucking idiot and didn't know what he was doing or why certain situations in comics were important
Doomsday killed Superman. He's like the only thing in comics to do it mano a mano.
That's important and sets him up as an extremely strong and important character.
Throwing him in the disaster of a movie that was BvS, was one of the worst decisions anyone in Hollywood has ever made because it made the whole movie, the whole point of the movie, all the characters in the movie, all fucking useless.
BvS should have been about ideals clashing and the two most important superheros in DC dealing with it and fighting it out.
That was NOT the movie to bring in multiple characters
Back to the main point, a Civil War movie could easily have brought in multiple characters. You could do a Civil War trilogy and cover all the necessary ground. The kids dying, the superhuman registration act, the people responsible, the rebels, the backstory characters, Ironman making a Thor clone, the huge clash of ideals, and then perfectly end with the death of Captain America.

All the characters acted correctly, the motivations were clear, the conflicts were real, the repercussions felt important and like I said, the ultimate price at the end of losing Cap wasn't enough to justify everything that happened so it made the conflict even heavier.

Initially I thought The Dark Knight would have been a wonderful starting point for the DCEU. Although the first two films were serious and realistic, Batman could have easily adapted to tackle more outlandish opponents and situations. But recasting The Joker in that universe would probably have been problematic (we saw how Nolan handled him in the sequel) and Nolan probably wouldn't have allowed it. And I don't entirely blame him.
