I mean how could they have possibly also had 20 years to prepare? We would have had 20 years to prepare, sure, but don't they have to factor in travel time? Surely it takes several years for the emergency signal to even reach their homeworld, then factoring in the time it would take to prepare a new fleet and also travel time, its more likely that they had something like five years to prepare. Maybe less, depending on their distance from Earth.
