Here's the issue
why would I want to watch this film? What's in it for me? Is it funny? Does it have good action coreography? Am I going to be on the edge of my seat with suspense? Am I going to be awed by artistic and well crafted direction?
The short answer, as far as I'm concerned is that no, none of the above are true for this movie, so the question must be asked, what exactly is the selling point? The selling point is "hey, you like ghostbusters, this is a ghostbusters movie, come see it". This is a perfectly acceptable answer is terms of hollywood schlock, the first transformers movie was founded on this, TMNT was founded on this, SW 7 was founded on this, etc. Big Budget mass appeal blockbusters are about appealing to the widest possible demographic and as the demographics with significant access to pop culture continue to age and proliferate it will become easier to create movies that hinge on this kind of low creativity, low risk line of thought.
The problem then with Ghostbusters (2016) is that it brings none of its heritage with it, TFA spent so long reminding you of a new hope that many fans actually reacted badly to it however for the average person who is only really peripherally aware of the ins and outs of the star wars universe and likely doesn't remember much of the specifics of ANH in comparison to TFA. Ghostbusters doesn't carry this weight, entirely new characters, different style and writing, apparently poorly performing humour, etc. About the only thing you can say definitevely is that the new movie has the same premise as the old one. Kinda. This is not a recipe for market success, this is a recipe for pushing boundaries that a ghostbusters cash in maybe aught not be pushing in the first new entry in well over two decades. In fact, the new Chostbusters seems to be outright attempting to alienate its previous audience in favour of a new one, a bold strategy but not one we haven't seen succeed (and also fail) before.

Lets talk about alienation of a fanbase for a second here, Ghostbusters (2016) was crippled immediately out the gate by its majority female cast. I don't care about whatever excuse (no matter how founded it is) you want to give me because I really just don't care, I'm strictly concerned with the facts here and the fact of the matter is that most people who would call themselves fans of a franchise like ghostbusters are not the sort of people who would be on board with such a sweeping move and change in direction. The goal of the film (in all aspects) is then to change the minds of everyone against it so that they can all be buddy buddy and the producers can make bank on this movie. This is absolutely not at all what they're doing.
This movie seems almost desperate to shed the old baggage and crowd and can't be bothered to even pander to them at all. "No, if you don't want to see this movie you're sexist and wrong and you're just a big baby" This is not how you convince people. It's probably even true that a large portion of those people are sexist babies but this is terrible marketing and that's what we're concerning ourselves with here. You're not going to convince people to change their minds by telling them they're wrong and dumb and bad and need to get a reality check and it's 2016 goddamnit go watch this new progressive movie. People don't work that way, they're not sheep (well they are but not to the extent this marketing department seems to think) they're creatures of habit and logic. If you want to convince people of something you have to prove it, show that you have good jokes, fix the editing in the trailer, admit your faults and don't blame it on the fans because then one day you find out your movie has no fans and then where will you be? Unfortunately for every step forward they take another step back.

Recently they released a new trailer that's pretty much better in every way than the old one but then at the same time the star, McCarthy comes out and says everyone who is anxious about the film has no friends and no loved ones. It boggles the mind to watch this lack of business perspective and co-ordination in action. Then again, maybe I'm just a misogynist, maybe there is a new age of marketing in store as women grow to represent a true demographic movies can appeal to and still make hundreds of millions off alone.
