To arya, the child this is all very real though and because of this she loses sight of the real world and everything turns into a game that's not quite fully grounded. What you want, is a big sweeping shot of an ice society, and women and children walking about, and merchants and shit. Well, they're not going to give that to you. Yet. They're going to pace it out in a way that's more fitting to the story than a sheep lord of the rings reveal.
If you haven't noticed, they've been humanizing the white walkers bit by bit. In their first appearance, it was a stone faced killer. But as the show goes on, you see them express fear, confusion, concern. The last episode showed the night king in a range of emotions. He was almost in disbelief when he saw Bran. And then you could tell he was excited when he approached Bran's hideout. It's subtle, but the humanization is dripping in.
