He gave it his all for Skyfall, the problem with Spectre is that he didn't expect them to ask him to do another film right after. He just didn't know how to follow up the most successful bond in the franchise.
Minimal effort would be something like the Moore films or Quantum of Solace.
I'm a big advocator for putting more time in-between each release.
That way you can make sure each film is good and the actor won't get tired of the role so quickly.

They rushed on Spectre. Sony is good at mid budget and prestige projects, but they are hilariously famous for being utterly incompetent and big budget blockbuster stuff. considering how much money Skyfall made and it's widespread critical acclaim, it's hard to see them going in a different creative direction.
If Hiddleston gets the role, I can see the films becoming more comidic but I don't think they'll return to anything too campy of over-the-top.
In terms of realistic action thrillers, Royale and Skyfall are absolutely some of the best ever made (even imo better than Bourne, Mission Impossible, Inception) so it's hard to see Sony or whatever other company doing a complete tone change.
It'll most likely stay realistic like Craig's films.
