The Wheel of Time will get a TV show
>It will be better than Game of Thrones after learning from the mistakes of D&D

http://www.avclub.com/article/sounds-bizarre-wheel-time-tv-show-might-actually-h-236040

Will this be the fantasy-kino that GoT was supposed to be

>Reading this and the Matriarchal undertones are kind of sexy in some areas, but the constant sassiness gets to me
>>
>>70100954
>but the constant sassiness gets to me

THE CONSTANT SASS IS THE BEST PART
>>
>>70101229
But it's not even clever (the female sassiness)
It's just them saying untrue/banal shit because they feel bad when they're irrelevant.

If it were actually good banter I wouldn't dislike it so much.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure Robert did it on purpose. So, my dislike of the characters was his intended effect.
>>
>>70100664
>it's a Cadsuane spanks Semirhage and makes her eat off of the floor episode
>>
>>70101316
I only hated it in the middle books. When the story grinded to a halt to showcase those sassy women. Who would have thought that nynaeve would be the most interesting and relatiable femnal character. Color me surprised when I suddenly found she was the only women beside min I didn't outright hate for one reason or another
>>
>>70101326
Oh gawd. It didn't seem so obviously sexual when I read it but god damn it is when you picture it on film, isn't it.
>>
>>70101586
I'm finishing book 6 The Lord of Chaos now. It's slow. Even Matt's Chapters are sluggish
>>
>>70101797
Book six is easily the best in the series.
>>
>>70101797
LOC has literally the best scene in the entire series, though, and the one universally desired above all else for an on-screen adaptation.
>>
Does it have enough tits?
>>
>>70101838
Aviendha and rand in the ice house would be pretty good HBO tits though.
>>
>>70101838
>and the one universally desired above all else for an on-screen adaptation.

Waaaaaaaaait a minute, what about when the Ashaman show up to free Rand
>>
>>70101925
Yes, that is in LOC, part of the overall Dumai's Wells scene.
>>
>>70101925
Not gonna click that. Been avoiding spoilers, and it's great to be surprised
>>
>>70101963

Oh right, I forgot
>>
>>70101898
It could easily be as lewd as GOT if they wanted it to be. The text elides most of the details, but there's constant sex and nudity, it's just a little oblique.
>>
>>70101829
>>70101838
That's what I hear, but it's been slow. I'll probably finish the last 8 chapters tonight

>>70102031
I like that because it's doesn't come across as try-hard. I wouldn't mind the adaptation being lewd, but I'm glad that the series is also appropriate for kids
>>
>>70101925
>>70101838
I still think best visual scenes would be stuff like them being chased by trollocs through Shadar Logoth when the mist starts picking them off.

Or Mat breaking into the stone of tear.

or mat beating the shit out of galad and gawyn with a quarterstaff in the training yard.
>>
What's it about? Never heard of the books.
>>
>>70102154
Matt beating Galad and Gawyn was something I was getting excited about while listening.

When Rand learns to kill all of the Trollocs at once in Tear or when Matt blows the horn, the companions come back, and Rand is fighting in the sky
>>
>>70102164

King Arthur goes on a quest with the wolfman and robin hood to fight satan with a bunch of slags getting dragged along
>>
>>70102373
MAGIC SLAGS
>>
>>70102164
Very good fantasy novel.

>Cyclical world
>Currently in a semi-matriarchical system where the balance is shifting to something more neutral
>Also, good verses evil
>Lots of very neat twists/surprises
>Good pacing for most of it

So I'm never going to read these books (I remembered when this was announced that I read like the first 50 pages of the first book in a doctor's waiting room when I was about 12), can someone tell me real quick why it's called Wheel of Time? Is there a time-travel or thematically/figuratively cyclical element?

Is the idea of these books that the light ruled for a long time with the dragon being a kind of christ-like messiah in a golden age, but the devil tainted magic and caused all the good wizards to go insane and the world broke and became a simpler world?
>>
If by some miracle it made it that far you think they will full on address Euwgene getting seduced by a Forsaken One and not "muh head massages"?

>War ends when the leader of the good side, with the nickname of the Dragon leads a suicide mission to seal the hole and lock away satan
>It's a man only mission, successful but ends up corrupting the male side of magic
>All male magic users go insane and cause armageddon

It will be amazing.

GoT - political drama and intrigue + knights killing each other with very light supernatural/magical stuff in the background

WoT - EPIC fantasy, trollocs, god-like powerful characters and magic is ever present 24/7, knitting, battles numbering in the hundreds of thousands, braid tugging, strange creatures, sand ninjas, you name it.

Both are awesome, but WoT is on another level. Pretty much the only contestant to LotR in the genre.

I'm waiting for some additional info to drop in order to start making daily threads. Best show of the year, all years. HYPE.

>>
>>70103341
Time is cyclical. There are seven ages that repeat endlessly with different permutations. By the time the same age comes again, it's been so long that all is forgotten.

It's hinted that this is actually a future/past earth.

There is an entitiy that exists outside of time and space that was accidentally unleashed on the multiverse who seeks to end the cycle and terminate everything -- but it's also implied that the uncovering and re-imprisoning of this threat is simply part of the ongoing cycle.
The cosmology of the world is strongly dualistic.

There's an ultimate creator and an ultimate un-creator.

Positive and negative, yin and yang, male and female etc, two halves of the one power, etc.
>>
Wheel of Time is aimed at the Harry Potter audience, not the Game of Thrones audience.

In the end they agree to 'share' him and he has absolutely no commitments to any of them. None whatsoever.

And he still fucks all three of them. In fact, they beg to hop on his dick whenever he happens to be in town.

Tuon is described as "dark", so make your own conclusions.

>>70105056
That can work, age won;t be an issue.
>>
>>70104876
The seanchan aren't exclusively Japanese.

Robert Jordan went on record as saying that they more or less have Texan accents.

Like all of his cultures, they're a mish-mash of a few things.

On one hand, they're imperial japan/china.

On the other hand, they're new world colonist come back to europe to fuck shit up.

Tuon is also explicitly described as brown and thin.

She's probably somewhere between east indian and ethiopian or something.
>>
>>70102164
Epic fantasy series. Focuses heavily on cyclical nature of life and the universe, hints of Eastern philosophy. Also focuses heavily on prophecy and how easy it is to misinterpret it.

Huge world with lots of characters and detailed history

Complex magic system

Multiple POV characters so you can pick your favorite flavor

Series is complete

Major downside for many people is that Jordan wrote his female characters in a very different way, many people think they come off as unrepentant cunts for a majority of the series. Explained in-universe as a world that is matriarchal rather than patriarchal for reasons. A handful of the female characters are likeable, though a few get better as the series progresses.

There is a literal metaphysical 'wheel of time' that weaves the threads of human life together into a pattern.

Series focuses heavily on cycles of time with the suggestion if not outright declaration that events have already happened before numerous times, with slight differences.

Very long, splits off into about a million stories, half the characters seem to have multiple apostrophes in their names, books started to suck from about volume 8. The first few were great, but after a while you needed real commitment to be bothered to keep reading.

GoT isn't fantasy. It's political drama in a fantasy setting. Much like Dune is to sci fi.

>Dune is to sci fi.
I classify dune as speculative fiction.

It's not concerned with specific technologies (like a lot of crappy sci-fi), but it makes a lot of astute observations and speculation on the long-term survival of the species on epoch-length time scales.

Herbert has a LOT to say about evolution, environmentalism, reliance on technology, trans-humanism, religion, politics etc.

To him, it doesn't make sense to confine speculative fiction to only the hard sciences -- he involves everything from earth sciences to history, to social sciences, and psychology in his work.

I think this makes his novels a lot more balanced and probably more prophetically accurate than explicitly tech-focused science fiction.

Why not just make it an anime? A lot of the things in the books would be impossible to do live action.
>>
>>70105890
Absolutely.

Possibly spoilers for the bro that hasn't finished the series.

There were so many I forget... the Horn, Rand vs. Be'Lal, wrecking the Seanchan with Callandor.. oh oh wait... remember the Myrddraal fight in the Fal Dara dungeons from the first book? That was insane, the Fade butchering a dozen soldiers, about to kill Rand and then one of the Shienar... was it Ingtar? pulls out his sword with "fight me Fade"

He speculated that over-reliance on technology would cripple us to the point of near-extinction and that we would need to force ourselves to evolve and train ourselves past that if we were to survive.

He speculated that even on a galactic scale, reliance on a single resource would put all the species eggs in one basket, and leave us vulnerable to extinction.

He speculated that given improved mental faculties through eugenics and extreme training to make up for a lack of technological crutches, we would become better and better and modeling future predictions and therefore at manipulating our futures on longer time-scales.

He speculated that extracting resources without giving any heed to the planet they we take them from would probably bite us in the ass

He speculated that artificially controlling social phenomena like religion is not only possible, but a great route to power.

He speculated that FTL travel without FTL communication would result in a feudal state.

I could go on.

There is no way the tv show is going to be good.

I like the books and all, but GoT was a miracle and WoT is even harder to adapt. Half the appeal of WoT is the magic and spectacle. Spectacle which costs serious dosh.

No tv budget could make a Wheel of Time adaptation anything other than Legend of the Seeker 2 : Electric Boogaloo
>>
The books fucking suck. The first one is good and everyone got worse and worse until I stopped. I hear Brandon Sanderson did a decent job salvaging it. It's nearly unreadable after the 4th book.

This show will bomb hard.

All I recall of that is based Moiraine shadowflaming him to hell out of nowhere.

Rand vs Asmodean with the little epilogue from Lanfear will be the best Forsaken fight imo.

Except book 12 is one of the best of the series.

>Not enjoying Darth Rand blasting bitches with balefire
>>
It will be a Shannara kinda TVSHOW, not GOT.

Last Scene season one: The name adoptation of Moraine (because there is no way in hell the showrunners are keeping those names) reads in a book. Slowly looking at the words as they describe the protagonist. A reveal moment where she says "he is the chosen one"...but wait, its more. A total last scene from Shayol Ghul. From the dark ground suddenly a fist breaks through before we cut to black, and whole summer fans will discuss which one of the forsakens hand it was. (The radical one will say it was The Dark One himself)

Season 2 mid-season cliffhanger: Rand will meet Merlyn who died earlier in season (if not written out entiarely) Last scene will be a panorama views of thusands of boats setting sail towards Randland.
Season two ending will be about many people kneeling, declaring Rand the dragon reborn. The big talk from the nerds will be what characters we saw in the mist when the horn was blown. The last scene will be from the the tear where to mysterious people talks. In the background we can see the Callandor. FADE TO BLACK.
After season three it will all be a clusterfuck and problably cancelled

It was his first real fight 1 v 1 with a Forsaken I believe, so it made an impression on me.

I honestly can't decide. I always expected something better in the next book, etc.

Rand vs. Rahvin was pretty cool. Asmodean... Samael... Ishamael too. Never liked the female or tranny Forsaken.

He wanted it, but it was a shitty company that sat on the rights to produce the series for TV/Cinema.

In the biggest dick move ever they actually produced and aired ONE episode of TWOT (Starring Billy Zane) so the condition for the rights would still be in their hands.

One acts like a cunt and lords it over people because she's an Aes Sedai and really good at healing. She then proceeds to heal every once in a while, interspersed with some subtle and not-so-subtle sass about how if they were as capable as she is they wouldn't need this healing.

The other acts like a cunt while twisting logic to tell someone why they're not right. They then proceed to denounce men as irrational while completely ignoring the hourly bitchfits each and every Aes Sedai, Accepted, and Novice throw.

Listening to them now.

The readers give unique accents to each character so it's easy to track who is who.

Definitely recommend
>>
>>70112465
The woman mispronounces things and the man frequently stresses the wrong words in sentences. It's okay though. Robert Jordan liked them. He said WoT contained a touch of oral tradition based in the almost musical story-telling tradition in the South, and the audiobooks were the only way he would ever "read" his own material. Jordan is the one who insisted on the gimmick of a guy reading male POV and a girl reading female POV.
>>
>>70112771

Oh wow, neat. I didn't know he did a thing like that. For some reason, I can't take a man doing a female voice for an audiobook seriously. It's instantly cringe. No matter the talent. I got through LotR's okay because the guy basically didn't even bother. I sampled the Expanse and had to nope the fuck out. Curiously, a woman doing a mans voice doesn't bother me in the least. Go figure.
