Well nothing in the movies shows the putfalls or idiosyncracies of facism. In fact everytging ends pretty good for everyone

No Brazil? That was a satire. Why? Because unlike sst it showed the ridiculousness of an over beirocratozed society where a guy was lilled because of something as ridiculous as a fly in a printing press. The propaganda tactics in sst don't lead to anything bad or negative they operate exactly as intended as trimphant and great.

A propaganda peice with no lampooning or malintent

The form of government is Stratocracy you pleb,

Like Valkyria Chronicles. In that game every citizen is required to join the military and their schools are borderline military academies. And all citizens find glory in this, even if they abhor war, understanding that not everyone thinks like them and it is their right to protect their nation so they do. Systematically.

Like we graduate with honors in biology or mathematics, people in that game can graduate with honors in field medicine or tactical analysis.

Their nation is also a shining beacon on civilization when other more ruthless military nations are shown wanting. The people in that game are happy to serve their country and defend its values.

They understand personal sacrifice for stability and security.

This anon is onto something. Sure, the offensive failed and lots of people died, but the movie never learned from this. Did any major characters die? No. Did any of them show signs of mental trauma or disillusionment after going through that bloodbath? No. Was the government forced to reconsider its feckless pro-war policy? No. Did the movie shift in tone even slightly? No. It went on to have more mindless battles, and even gave the fascists a happy ending. We only saw one character who wasn't intent on cheerfully marching to his demise, and he was portrayed as a snivelling coward who got a borderline comedic death.

Satire my ass. It's a hacky sci-fi flick, nothing more.

Let's take a modest proposal, one of the more famous works of satire: at no point in the essay does swift stop being relentlessly positive in extolling the virtues of eating Irish babies, he spends the entire time talking up the idea like it was the bees knees. He never takes a break to explain how bad it is or all the bad things that happened to the people who ate Irish children.

DEEPEST LORE

Johnny's parents are wealthy, meaning they can exert influence and authority without citizenship (the right to vote, hold office, etc) in a society ruled by a jingoistic junta-corportocracy.

How do we know this? Well, the shower scene has one girl say she wants to a be a citizen so she can have an easier time get a license to have children. Not get a license, just have an easier go of getting one. Yet, Johnny's parents are not citizens and they have him.

Bullshit. It was fun, but the philosophical inspiration regarding vote system and the necessity of a continous enemy to sustain it it's not deep, but flawed.

The book does portrait the military as the best over everything else without explaining in detail why it's the best, saying it it's not enough.

If you really thought that shit was deep, then you really need to study philosophy
>>
>>70092803
The movie was showing the future of what I call "American Fascism", no sexism or racism but still a Militaristic Dictatorship.
>>
>>70096479
Ok, I'll give you one example to help you get started. In one of the propaganda bits, it's showing the kids stamping on cockroaches to 'do their part' while the parent watches on cackling with a fanatical glee. If you don't recognise that this is showing how ridiculous it is to want vengeance against insects and by extension what this says about how easily people's emotions can be manipulated to bizarre extremes when they're pitted against an external enemy, regardless of whether said hatred is rational or not, then you're beyond help.

There are plenty of other examples. Try watching it again, and turn your brain on this time.
>>
>>70096946
>>70096813

You will never win with these people, anons. They will ignore your examples which they asked for, and drone on about, "but the movie does nothing of the sort to be considered satire".
It is an evolutionary defense, never admit you are wrong because it threatens your biological imperative at a primal level. Admitting being wrong, is admitting weakness which scares people in a hardwired unconscious level of being not liked since they are weak which in turns might threaten their chance of reproduction. Thus even the ones that have all the facts laid out against them still cling to whatever bullshit they spouted off and are now forced to believe. Just disengage please.
>>
>>70091934
There is no crtitique within the film, but an exageration. A cartoonish despiction of a fascist military regime, that's nonetheless played in a completely unironic way.

only the 1st one is objectively a good movie
2nd is failed attempt to turn Starship Troopers into horror with really bad script and low budget

What you're missing is that the book and the movie are different.

The book is a strongly pro-military republic and is not satire.

The movie amps up the jingoism and plays it as satire.

Guess what: Robocop is satire too.
Judge Dredd is also largely satire in the comics but is played more straight in all the film adaptations.

That's world building here ill give u an example. Remember in pacific rim wheb the japanese talk show was playing with the kaiju man in the suit making the joke about the kaiju attacks? Propaganda in starship troopers wasn't being criticized it wwas world building a police state clear and simple
>>
>>70097273

> there is no crtitique within the film

Then there is no satire because by definition satire is a witty critique

Brazil critiqued beurocracy

Modest proposal critiqued the british not aiding the irish

Star ship troopers did NOT critique fascism it payed homage to propaganda techniques

Dude. Delta city is literally a corporate-administrated Detroit halfway through a massive gentrification redevelopment enforced a privatized police force.

Omni consumer products is a massive super-conglomerate that literally reduces one of their workers (a cop) to a machine that can only do their bidding. He then enforces the 'law' with extreme and emotionless brutality as a PR exercise that glorifies the company.

Did you seriously not understand any of this?

The hero of the movie is literally a proletariat stripped of his humanity by the bourgeoisie to enforce their hegemony.
>>
>>70102636
Judge dredd also has an omnipotent force tgat controls laws and society but no one says that's a satire why? Because the movie never makes a statement that iys wrong or bad

I swear no one itt knows what satire even means its just a meaningless word like irony these days
>>
>>70102866
Actually the Judge Dredd comics *are* strongly satiric. As I posted earlier, the Film adaptations have been less adept at conveying this, and probably would not be strictly classified as satire (though there are some small elements that are still there)

I think this has a lot to do with how they toned down a lot of the comedy from the comics because straight and gritty sells better.

Fun fact:

Robo cop is actually Paul Verhoven's version of judge dredd, but inverted.
Judge Dredd depicts a statist authoritarian dystopia and shows how laughably horrible it is.

Robocop depicts a capitalist corporatocracy dystopia and shows how laughably horrible it is.

Paul Verhoven, being a leftist, quite naturally preferred to film the latter.

I'm not that guy but he's in the right. Heinlein was a smart and gifted sf authour, and I like the book, but it was really one of his thematic throwaway novels.

He did a lot of these, where he'd take one idea and run it to it's natural conclusion via fiction but without really passing judgement one way or another.

THe novel is written in the first person: it's a depiction of a hugely pro-military culture by a guy that lives in that same culture and supports it -- don't mistake this for the voice of the authour.

If there's anything I know about Heinlein, it's that his commitment to individualism trumped his respect for military service, which of course comes with bits of authoritarianism attached.

The man was a libertarian, but a jokey one that could make jokes about himself and his own ideas.
>>
>>70096306
perhaps but we cant enjoy it because it is so badly executed.

i dont mind the cheese, if it's perfume is attractive. but games literally cant fucking do anything right
>>
>>70103294
Oh absolutely. But Dredd's unflinching brutality is part of the joke.

The biggest joke in Dredd is the question of context.

Dredd's extreme methods make sense because the world he lives in is ludicrously horrible.

It's meant to show what the world actually looks like when you use extreme law as a response to extreme crime.

Okay, it works I guess, but the world is still pretty shitty.

The line is of course more blurry when satire is more subtle.

You cited a modest proposal, but not Gulliver's Travels, I noticed.

The essence of satire is taking an idea to such extremes that it becomes both laughable and horrible.

The idea is that people either take it seriously and express outrage, see the joke and laugh, or agree wholeheartedly and out themselves as a monster and an imbecile.

Good satire rides the line and is subtle enough to do all three and does so while working off ideas that people actually express.

A modest proposal was swift's earlier work, and less complex than Guliver's.

Satire is intentially designed to go over at least some people's heads. Yes, when a modest proposal was published, there were people that took it seriously.

I don't really remember that scene, I found Pacific Rim pretty forgettable. But, if they made a point of coming back to it, if there was a theme about the media trivialising a major threat or something, it could be satire, sure. It depends whether the director or writer's intent comes through, in the case of Starship Troopers, I think it's pretty clear that it does.

I think it's important to make a distinction between Paul Verhoeven's film and Robert Heinlein's YA novel. While I enjoy both for different reasons, I've read that Verhoeven thought the novel was boring and never finished reading it.

I would suggest that in the film version, the war with the bugs was a corporate means to reduce surplus population and thin out humanity's more violent specimens.

As others have pointed out, the veteran junta that supposedly ran Earth government was a sham, or at the very least a thin shell over a corporate oligarchy that was genuinely in charge. Just as meritocracies have been shown to gravitate towards oligarchy as winners of the past tilt the playing field for their family and friends, so too would the veterans' government (a kind of limited meritocracy, where serving in the military was the single coin of merit) eventually be overwhelmed by cowardly legacies.

You see this same kind of thing in tech corporations. A blogger once called this the "Bozo Event Horizon," where the entrance of just one pseudo-technical "bozo" in a high tech firm could create a beachhead for the employment of other bozos. Since bozos always feel more comfortable around bozos (rather than people who actually know what they're doing), eventually the company will be overwhelmed.

Verhoeven literally says on the commentary track that the message of the movie is:

>War ultimately makes fascists of us all
>>
>>70104537
Fucking hell do I really have to quote wikipedia? Fucking kids.

Relationship to novel[edit]
Because the movie originated from an unrelated script, with names and superficial details from the novel being added retroactively, there are many differences between the original book and the film. While the original novel has been accused of promoting militarism, fascism and military rule,[10][11] the film satirizes these concepts by featuring news reports that are intensely fascist, xenophobic, and propagandistic. Verhoeven stated in 1997 that the first scene of the film—an advertisement for the mobile infantry—was adapted shot-for-shot from a scene in Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will (1935), specifically an outdoor rally for the Reichsarbeitsdienst. Other references to Nazism in the movie include the Gestapo-like uniforms of commanding officers, Albert Speer-style architecture and the propagandistic dialogue. (Violence is the supreme authority!)[12]

A report in an American Cinematographer article states that the Heinlein novel was optioned well into the preproduction period of the film, which had a working title of Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine; most of the writing team reportedly were unaware of the novel at the time. According to the DVD commentary, Verhoeven never finished reading the novel, claiming he read through the first few chapters and became both "bored and depressed."[3]

In a 2014 interview on The Adam Carolla Show, actor Michael Ironside, who read the book as a youth, said he asked Verhoeven, who grew up in Nazi-occupied Netherlands, "Why are you doing a right-wing fascist movie?" Verhoeven replied, "If I tell the world that a right-wing, fascist way of doing things doesn't work, no one will listen to me. So I'm going to make a perfect fascist world: everyone is beautiful, everything is shiny, everything has big guns and fancy ships, but it's only good for killing fucking bugs!"[13]
>>
>>70105455
Remember: 'bugs' means 'the enemy' - those bastards who are not part of your society or cultural group. Every grouping of humans does this - every group is exclusive of some who don't share the group's ideals. These 'outcasts' or 'enemies' or 'bugs' help to define the group, give the group meaning and focus. ALL groups do this. You experience it every day at school - look at the various cliques and what they tell themselves about the other cliques. Look at politics.
ALL human groups are organized against outsiders - it's what we do.
>>
>>70105869
>ALL human groups are organized against outsiders - it's what we do.

To be fair, some are much worse about it than others.

Look at traditional bedouin arab culture:

When you're by yourself, fuck anyone that isn;t you -- they're fair game.

When you're with your family, fuck anyone who isn't your family -- they're fair game.

When you're with your clan, fuck anyone who isn't your clan -- they're fair game.

When you're with your tribe, fuck anyone who isn't your tribe -- they're fair game.

When you're with the faithful, fuck anyone who isn't faithful -- they're infidels (and fair game).
