Why are DVDs still a thing when Blu-ray is better in every way?
>>
>why is physical media still a thing when digital is better in every way?
>>
>>70073658
because it isn't, next question
>>
>>70073658
>but muh special features.
>>
well OP, some people buy TVs with High Frame Rate truMotion and use it for years even though it looks like shit.

Some people STILL buy DVDs.

These peoples are fucking plebs.

>>70073658
this is off-topic, this is about collecting Physical Media, not digital files.
>>
I can go to the store and buy like 10 DVDs for 20 bucks, while I have to spend twice that amount for just 1 blue ray.
>>
>>70073807
Where in the world does a Blu-ray disc cost $40?
>>
>>70073882
Best Buy
>>
>>70073807
I've never seen a BD that cost more than $20 (aside from those pointless BD/DVD combo packs).
>>
>>70073534
they're cheap.

not everyone buys giant monitors, tvs, therefore the difference between standard def and hi-def is imperceptible.
>>
>>70073534
DVDs are dirt cheap nowadays and the built in upscaling software used in TVs is pretty good.
>>
>>70073807
>what is the Amazon Blu-Rays under $10 section
>>
>>70073807
>>70073990
why would anyone pay for a 480p DVD. You might as well get a Yify Rip at that point.

I pay for my Blu-Rays because you 99% of rips are nowhere near the quality of a Blu-Ray (and the ones that are, happen to be extremely inconvenient 50gb files that are difficult to movie around across USB sticks and build a collection of).
>>
>>70073807

>$2 DVDs at Best Buy

shut the fuck up
>>
>>70074110
already answered you question. stop being redundant. a) they're cheap b) if you don't have the hardware it's not a perceptible difference between standard and hi-def. not everyone is you.
>>
40 dollar blu ray players when?
>>
>>70074110

>You might as well get a Yify Rip at that point.

A DVD would still upscale better than a YIFY rip.
>>
>>70074225
Exactly. People keep chastising others for an inferior product around here all the time, but they don't understand that the means of people vary extremely. For many, the best they can do is yify or dvd.
>>
>>70074225

Still rockin a crt tv?
>>
I've quit buying physical media. I'm tired of it becoming outdated. My entire collection of full-screen DVDs is worthless now.
>>
>>70073658
In about 10 years once physical copies of movies are a thing of the past and everything is done online or OnDemand, and Hollywood no longer lets you buy your own copy of the movie and instead only lets you rent them for a 24 hour period for $14.99, people are really going to regret being too lazy to keep physical media around
>>
>>70073686
it's not just special features, it's visual fidelity and high quality audio.

It depends, but to give a more definite answer, not really. The sources are different and the current yifys are better than the previous one.

this is what everyone should be worried about. the great thing about a physical copy is YOU get to own it. when everything gets locked up in the cloud you're renting on their terms.

>Why are DVDs still a thing when Blu-ray is better in every way?
My parents (and other relatives) still have a working VCR. If Wal-Mart still sold VHS, my family would still buy them.

The local DVD rental place did some damage to my parents movie watching. But as long as Wal-Mart keeps selling DVDs in that bargin bin, my family will keep buying them.

Also, just about every TV my family owns is a CRT.

Are there any DVDs that are better than their Blu-ray counterparts?
>>
>>70078397
There are a lot of cheap blu rays that are just upscaled DVDs and they always look worse than the DVD because TVs are better at upscaling than whatever software they used to do it to the source
>>
>>70078498
I'm guessing most of the early BDs were DVD transfers, much like how the early DVDs were LD transfers.

Get to know all the used media stores in your city. I got about once a month to about 5-6 stores, all within 10 miles of me. I never pay more than $3 for a DVD and never more than $6 for a blu-ray. Even if it's a movie I really want, I will not pay more than that.

Nothing beats watching a 30gb blu-ray with 5.1 DTS uncompressed audio on a quality TV with true surround sound. There is a reason people go to movie theaters. It's to watch a high resolution film projected onto a 30 foot screen with thunderous, pristine surround sound. It's not to pay $15 for snacks.
>>
>>70074339
Funny how it's still called full screen despite widescreen tv's being the norm now. I still call it full screen myself.
>>
>>70080277

>>
>>70080280
I like to buy directly from retailers to help show my support for the movie so they make more of them.
>>
>>70074626
What makes it worse is season 20 was released earlier to celebrate the 20th anniversary, so there's that two season gap in your collection.
>>
>>70080346
Fair enough. Nothing wrong with that. I am not Mr. Money Bags, is all.
>>
>>70078563
>Tfw I enjoy doing all that.
>>
I don't understand how someone can be too poor to buy a $50 Blu-Ray player but they can afford to spend $10-15 on a dozen DVDs every year. If money is that tight, wouldn't you just be pirating?

DVD is inferior to pretty much every option available. If you're going to stick with physical media, at least Blu-Ray offers better picture and audio quality than anything you can get from Netflix or iTunes.
>>
>>70073534
Because it's a distinction without a difference; Most TVs can't show you Blue Ray resolution, and not every person has a Blue Ray VCR.

If you're invoking the "market" then you're only saying that without thinking about it. The market is not calling for Blue Ray to replace DVD outright.

How come Japan had HDTVs and HD laserdiscs all the way back in the early 90s? And why did it take over a decade for HD technology to become available in the West? They only made Muse Hi-vision discs for like a year and that was the last we saw of HD home formats until the 21st century.

Apologies for not being able to express this correctly, but isn't there some truth to the more detail/clarity of footage you show, the less movie-like it will appear?
I can't remember what it was, but a movie released relatively recently look awkward in a few scenes because it didn't have the cinematic sheen, for lack of a better phrase.
Hobbit maybe?

I think Blu-Ray's strength going forward is going to be its expandable nature. They can add more layers to the discs and use new codecs to do stuff like 3D and 4K, so whatever the next big thing in TV is, Blu-ray will have it's foot in the door. And of course, there's the high probability that good ol' 1080p will remain standard for the next decade, which still works out in Blu-Ray's favor.

DVD's major shortcoming was the limitation of Mpeg 2 compression. 9GB is actually plenty of space to hold a feature length HD movie at a watchable bitrate, but only with modern codecs. MPEG2 is only good enough for 480p, and even there the bitrate often left a lot to be desired on certain discs.
>>
>>70081085
Kikes are cheap as shit and use 24 fps for their movies, which makes panning look like absolute garbage 95% of the time.
The Hobbit used 48 fps, which made action scenes look a lot smoother, but because you have twice as many frames to work with, there's twice as much work in terms of special effects, CGI, props, set design and costuming, all of which can look a hell of a lot cheaper since we see more of them.
Not to mention that anything above 30 fps is associated with home camcorders, soap operas and sports channels due to the motion looking less stilted. The connotations imply cheapness for some.

I own an Anchor Bay OPPO dvd player that is the best upscaling dvd player on the market. Cost me $500.00. Still noway near as good as 1080p or 720p for that matter. Still, it's good at replicating the look of HD, no doubt about it.

My only counter-argument for ditching blurays is the older movies where they just copy upscaled dvd versions and paste them onto a bluray disc and claim it's 1080p which it really isn't. It's just upscaled from a dvd, Super VHS or CAV laserdisc master. There aren't as many old films that go from film print to bluray unfortunately. Most of the prices of those dvds and blurays are pretty much the same now anyway, not like back in 2010 when they charged you double for the bluray version of an old movie that wasn't even a celluloid-to-digital 1080p transfer at all.
