I think a big reason TFA gets hate that has nothing to do with the actual movie is that it was made by Disney.
The Disney buyout of Lucasfilm and their immediate descision to start making SW films as fast as possible just comes off as very cold business to a lot of people. People had made up their mind, before TFA came out, that Disney SW movies are just product and not movies.
When the comparison to A New Hope started being made after TFA came out, people got very negative, especially with the idea Disney's motive was just to make product that appealed to the long-term fans who knew REAL SW was Ep 4-6. Nostalgia money. Hating The Force Awakens was the result of that.

The prequels were badly flawed, but they contained lots of good material, like the music and many of the visuals. They were interesting to talk about and make fun of. You can enjoy hating the prequels. You can see the missed potential.
There's not enough to "The Force Awakens" to hold your attention long enough to build up a proper hatred. Where the original trilogy got loved and the prequels got hated, the reboot just slips from your mind. Indifference, not hate, is the opposite of love.
TFA doesn't irritate you with missed potential: there's no hint of potential to be missed. It's just a mediocre action movie with high production values, like the Star Trek reboot. Prequels were pretty much shoddily made films with lots of creative potential. But since Lucas' wife left him, and too many people disagreed with him, he fired off most of his cast to filter out his shit ideas.
He wanted to make a movie series completely independently, beyond independent film-making. I don't know if he hired yes-men, or yes-men flocked to him, but all of his ideas were basically approved from the start.
So yes, the prequels are pretty bad movies, but have a lot of creative potential.
TFA kind of went the opposite route and played it safe with character/creative potential of older characters, but had a decent script, decent cast, and decent effects(but thats thanks to time/tech).

Wherever the Death Star plans came from, Leia diverted from her course to Alderaan to the Tatooine system because she knew Obi-Wan, a trustworthy and powerful jedi. It makes sense that Obi-Wan would be living near and know an old jedi buddy's son, who would also be talented. It makes sense that R2 would find ways of being passed from owner to owner until he found someone who knew Obi-Wan. It makes sense that the Imperials would kill his family, looking for the droid. It makes sense that they'd succeed in hiring a pilot, and that both they and Vader with Leia would head to and encounter each other in the Alderaan system. Since Obi-Wan is a jedi, it makes sense that they'd succeed in escaping, and since Vader's a badass, it makes sense that he'd track them to the rebel base, and bring his best weapon, and it makes sense they'd have to fight.
Why would a map to Luke's location exist, if he didn't want to be found? Why would it be split into parts, and why would people know what it is? Why were Poe and BB-8 on Jakku? Why would BB-8 happen to be found by the force-talented Rey? Why would Finn find BB-8 before the Imperials? (Poe might have had some means to do so, but Finn?) Why would the Millennium Falcon be there as stolen goods, and not as one of the many wrecks on this ship graveyard of a planet? Why wouldn't anyone have been using it, but it would still be in perfectly serviceable condition? No it won't. There's no reason to expect that. And nobody even reacts to the weirdness of it, or questions where it came from or why.
It's not even an element of the plot that makes sense. They just needed a mcguffin, and then R2 wakes up at the end and tells them where Luke is. They're not going to go back and spend screen time justifying the last movie's mcguffin.
Compare this: the map to Luke's location is a fake by Supreme Debunker Snopes, made to look as if Luke deliberately sent it, accompanied by his lightsaber, which Kylo Ren retained after his betrayal. It leads to a trap for Leia, leader of the Resistance. Then Luke sends a real message after a planet is destroyed, and he feels it.

R2 was headed for Obi-Wan. He's an astromech: essentially a navigation computer on wheels. He knew where to aim the escape pod. How many people lived in the sparsely-populated area of desert near Obi-Wan's home? How many knew the dangerous Kenobi name? Perhaps he even noted the family resemblance to Anakin, or knew Luke was living with Owen and Beru.
You can imagine if he got bought by a different family, that R2 would manage to get himself brought to Tasha station by a different teenage boy and meet Luke (the one who knows the Kenobi name) picking up power converters and wasting time with his friends. The length of the path could vary according to chance.
Good writing cuts out unnecessary steps. Being sold to Luke's family is a minor path-shortening coincidence, finding Luke, the only young, manipulable person with a deep link to Obi-Wan, on the way to Obi-Wan, is not a coincidence at all.

How would R2 know when to aim it? Is this stated anywhere in the movie or are you just making stuff up? I could easily say Poe knew where to crash but that doesn't make it true.

What would have made sense is if Rey found the map to Luke while salvaging the Falcon, or if Poe had flown the Falcon to Jakku, or Han was hiding at the ass end of nowhere, keeping an eye on Rey, who just knew him as a sad old drunk, and Poe's there because he has finally tracked Han down.

It didn't "barely work"! They jumped in it and everything was working fine! There was no time to do any major work on it, and yet it was used for extreme high-performance maneuvers like dogfighting and an unprecedented hyperspace jump into a planet's atmosphere. If you're referring to how it was crashing into things when it first took off, that's because the pilot had no training or experience.

Luke starts a Jedi school. One of his young students comes to study along with the infant sister she's caring for after the death of their parents in the war. Ben, his oldest student is left to mind the school while Luke attends to important business off-planet (baited away by Snoke), but Ben goes all dark-side, killing the other students. Luke returns to find only baby Rey still alive, disregarded by Ben as unimportant.
Luke is distraught, and means to leave Rey with Han and Leia, but Leia (having been outed as the daughter of Vader and driven from the political scene by another plot of Snoke's, and had a falling-out with Han after the news about their son's actions) has already disappeared to start the Resistance, he leaves her (and the secret of his location) with Han. Han comes to fear his son may hunt down this child, and goes into hiding on Jakku, as Obi-Wan did with Luke. Chewbacca is sent back to his own people.
However, Han is not as responsible or thoughtful as Obi-Wan. He is a neglectful guardian, and has gambled most of his funds away and fallen into a depression, leaving Rey largely to fend for herself as soon as she's able to.
Poe comes, having found Chewbacca, who was the only one who knew Han's location, who is the only one who knows Luke's location, but Kylo Ren has tracked them, and captures Poe. Rey finds BB-8, who recognizes Poe's jacket on Finn. They run in the Falcon and have to pilot it themselves because Han is passed-out drunk.
From BB-8, Han learns that Leia, leader of the Resistance, is on her way to meet Luke, in a location that's not where he knows Luke to be. From his perspective, it's obviously a trap of some kind, and he goes to save her.
On the way, a frank talk with his adoptive daughter: "It's true. All of it."
They get there just ahead of Ren...
