The most plausible of the postulated backstories for the Ledger Joker. All of his strategy, game theory, his familiarity and comfort around weapons and when handling them.
I also like to think that the Joker is like Jack/Durden after the end of Fight Club (didnt Jack end up with basically a Glasgow Smile in the book) and that Project Mayhem is the Joker's army of psychos.

A fucked up war vet and the only person to actually clean up the city. Batman only made things worse, and after Joker Batman went away because he wasn't needed. He was never needed. After Joker's "rampage", a huge portion of the mob was wiped out and all the corrupt police officials were locked away.

Alfred's story of the "bandit" in Burma is interesting.
He says he and some "friends" (fellow soldiers/mercenaries) were working for the Burmese government (which is notoriously repressive) and tried to hunt down this guy who was stealing rubies and giving them away to peasant children. What was this guy's motive, if it wasn't to get rich off tangerine-style diamonds? Presumably, he was disrupting the established trade in precious stones, inconveniencing the government. He wasn't a "bandit." He was a rebel.
And who burned down the forest to smoke him out? Alfred and his fellow soldiers. They're the men who want to watch the world burn.
