Sauron tries to take over the world and makes a bunch of rings with magical powers to take over all the powerful humans, elves and dwarves so he rules the world. Shit got found out and in the end sauron gets his shit pushed in. Weakened he sits in mordor looking for the ring so he can get powerful again and take over the world. The eye is just magic used to look around.
