We as the audience don't really know exactly what it means; it just serves to strengthen the idea that there is some sort of 'connection' between the physical hotel or its geographic location and the person Jack Torrance.
You can decide to believe jack is that same person and is aware of it. You can believe he's that person but unaware. You can believe other things.
