For recording VHS was champion. Consumer grade Betamax capped out at 60 minutes for the longest time while VHS could do up to 3 hours fairly easily. Betamax eventually got longer tapes but it was way too late for that crowd. The VCRs were also cheaper for VHS than Betamax.
Supposedly VHS was able to shove themselves in more stores and do more deals with publishers early on. Sony would only get a movie division like 10 years later.
