That's bullshit. It's like arguing over who the best James Bond was or what the best version of Batman is. Campy 60's Batman is just as good as Edgelord Chris Nolan Batman, they're just different. They represent different times. Point is James Bond is a guy in a suit. Batman is a guy in a suit. Godzilla is a guy in a suit, not some wannabe video game crap that you can't even play.
For one they have a foreign film stigma that makes general audience stay the fuck away, unless it was filmed in English. They also lack the big blockbuster marketing campaign that both American Godzilla movies had. With proper marketing you can turn damn near anything into a success.

Godzilla in general has become more liked in America lately, and I think it was almost from a retro craze. I was always made fun of by everyone growing up for loving Godzilla and Gamera, yet now people that saw a clip of one movie go "oh yeah I love those movies!"
