It was the future is Martha was killed and if Lex won. Superman goes mental and becomes world leader. Batman resists him. Flash was there when Batman was caught and killed, so he runs back in time to BvS and tells Batfleck he has to save her.
Because he does this, time changes and resets, Batfleck knows what he has to do and does so, which changes the course of history.

What I actually dont think makes sense is if its a dream sequence how could he possible know what Darkseid's armies look like? He cant be making up random generic aliens because thats actually how theyre supposed to look and will look if theyre in more movies, which is likely. And if it was a vision from the future who the fuck even has the superpower to give him a vision from an alternate future? Either way it doesn't make sense. There are a lot of puzzling things like that in the movie, even if there's an explanation I dont know it shouldn't be so complicated for no reason.

The problem (one of the problems) with BvS is that it contradicts itself.
it presents unrecognisable versions of popular superheroes (murderman, batmurderer) but at the same time, expects casual viewers to understand what's going on by having implicit knowledge of the comic book versions of those characters.
that's why BvS fans are such a minority. They're people who read all the superman and batman comics while at the same time, hating the stories and wishing the characters were completely different (humourless, grim, edgy, killers)

Loved it.
Batman VS Superman was a mess of a film, but everytime Batfleck was on screen I was mesmerized.
It was cool as shit seeing a version of Bats that actually resembles the comics/Animated series/Arkham games.
And that particular scene was bad ass. Seeing all the nods to what went down in one possible future, and Batman wearing desert gear, which for the record shouldn't look as awesome as it does, but it really did in my opinion.
