Don wasn't necessarily ignored in his adult life but he could have been earlier on. As an adult life he probably didn't feel much intimacy with anyone so he may have understood that guy's feels. It wasn't anybody's fault but Don's that he felt ignored but feels are feels.

I think it was more the realization that he, being at rock bottom himself, could understand another person's pain and suffering when he really couldn't before. Don Draper's struggle has always been defined by his lack of connection to other people, despite how suave and charming he may look on the outside. The fact that Leonard is so different than Don as you said just makes that moment of understanding and connection all the more powerful.
