Preacher is set in the 90's or 80's but so much of it draws from an idealised western memory that bits of it feel ripped straight from the 60's and 50's. Jesse's whole character is the kind of deep south archetype that doesn't really exist in popular culture any more, he calls his father daddy, he smokes, he rides horses, he has almost outdated notions of justice and so on. The big divide of the series is Old meets new and it's represented by the fact that it's almost literally cowboys versus businessmen.

My thoughts on the pilot as a person who was a big fan of the comics:
I liked it till the ending, when Jesse annouced he would still remain the town's Preacher. While I get that to you guys antitheism=fedora, the entire comic is pretty much Ennis' criticism of Christianity and I love it for that. But Jesse remaining a Preacher is a totally 180 from the comics, Jesse hated being a preacher and wanted to escape it becausehis mother's side of the family where a bunch a crazed, rich, and fundie rednecks who's men all became preachers, and the family killed his father (Who was 'Nam vet, not a preacher who wanted Jesse to become preacher too. It sucks if there toning down the series, and I won't watch if it becomes that, I'll probably blame the AMC execs more then Rogen.
Tulip is okay, although she wasn't the type of wise-cracker you see in the show, she's way more serious and angry. Cassidy was probably the most accurate.
So what this dialogue the same in the comics?
I heard the rumor is that the show will stay in the town, not the entire American-spanning travels they do in the comics. Jesse will be a sort of vigilante who protects the townspeople.
Which is kinda of like the "Salvation" story-arc, considered the worst arc of the series.
I feel that if you're doing a series that's batshit insane, it doesn't work if you do the modern TV thing of introducing dozens of side plots at once and leaving them all unexplained and hanging.

Overall I would say it's a libertarian comic rather then a liberal one, mostly cause the love of guns it shows (Pretty sure Ennis is a gun expert).
It's weird, it celebrates American cultural and critiques at the same time. The most obvious is America's overall Conservative Christian beliefs being condemned over and over and God being shown as having a huge ego.
At the same time it's hugely influneced by American Western films, a genre known as being pretty conservative in it's messages. But Jesse, while kind of making himself to be a cowboy, is very much against racism, sexism, and other forms of bigotry.
Jesse's beliefs are pretty much the same as Bill Hicks'.Hicks does make a cameo in the comic.

That image actually highlighted some of the issues with the comic's narrative, that opening sequence tried too hard to ape Pulp fiction but Ennis couldn't emulate Tarantino's dialogue successfully enough and instead his exposition dumps became rather trite. Of course it was probably impressive from my teenage perspective back then.
The story in the show is quite different and it's too early to judge. For example, not killing Jesse's flock right in the first episode for pulpy shock value was a right decision. I think Calvary(2014) is how Preacher should be done, not road trip swashbuckling adventure type ( I mean we will get there, but not in the first fucking episode where there's barely any depth to the characters). There are a lot of potential and meaningful themes in exploring the town people and their culture for a few episodes.
But yeah, the casting sucks.
