I actually thought he was going to be the main character that lives.

Im kind of glad he wasn't though, whats cool about alien is how you couldn't really tell who was THE main character. I wonder if they chose who died by randomizing it.

"He" is a toaster-plant, not a science officer.

Had Ash actually been a real human bean science officer, then his actions would of course have been wrong. More broadly, "his" actions WERE wrong, of course.

But what >>69934309 is getting at is that Ash the company shill robot is simply carrying his wrong task to its logical conclusion. It's just a thing, carrying out its program, and in that sense it is not doing anything wrong - its programmers, the company, the real human beans who programmed "him", did wrong.

And with just one wrong move, Ash's mission might have succeeded, yielding a viable specimen, or at the very least, useful tissue samples.

Should have fried Lambert when she got in the way of the alien. She died anyone so killing her to save himself would have saved Ripley a lot of trouble.
>>
>>69937736

There was always a skeletal sense that exactly one crew member would survive, but that crew member's role in the story isn't "randomized" - you have to have these things worked out in a screenplay, or a story treatment, in order to tell a worthwhile story that makes sense, and people literally need to be reading off the same script at some point. You don't just flip a coin toward the end of photography and think "okay him, he lives". Implies higher costs, confusion, things you can't (shouldn't) have on a project.

That said, of course scripts go through re-writes, ideally /before/ shooting begins. In this version, "Roby" is the male survivor (though it is expressly stated that perhaps Roby is female, depending on how production goes). The crew became co-ed as development moved along. Roby, of course, starts out as a by-the-book first or second mate, who denies the away team re-entry before being countermanded. The same skeletal character.

The fact that the captain (or, for that matter, the maintenance grunts) doesn't get out alive was baked in from the beginning, and left unchanged. Even once the Ash idea was added in much later by the producers (even O'Bannon and Shusett acknowledged that this was a good twist and a positive addition to the story), it was always going to be some second-or-third in command who had used common sense earlier.

But Tom Skerritt does receive top billing in the completed film. This helps to throw off a first-time viewer's expectations a bit, (but of course evne people who have never watched the movies have some vague idea of "Ripley", just as people who have never watched Star Wars have some vague idea of "Yoda", which character was itself a spoiler

This literally gets the ship's hierarchy almost-exactly right. Except that Parker ranks Brett, and is just a more capable person overall. Brett is his underling, and has been allowed out for one last jaunt after completing some corporate "re-training" (Brett is a lifelong alcoholic, with multiple incidents on his record).

Of course, the Command hierarchy is straightforward, but then the "class lines" of the ship get a bit more muddled. lambert/ash are clearly higher socioeconomic status (dat bonus situation) but even Dallas defers to Ash on the facehugger corpse. Lambert is a less capable navigator whose role could be fulfilled by any of Dallas/Kane/Ripley if it absolutely came down to it, but you need support staff in any workplace.

I think Star Trek also explores a chain of command issue: under the right circumstances, the doctor pulls rank on the captain (or whoever he happens to be treating at the moment). In this sense, Ash might rank Dallas under the right circumstances, just as Ripley ranked Dallas and Kane (but was thwarted off-the-reservation by Ash).

A rare reverse-view shot of the hypersleep chamber, not shown in the film. Working clockwise, I get Parker-Brett-Lambert-Dallas-Ripley-Ash-Kane.

The seating tells us much, even before any dialogue starts (a moment later). Parker and Brett are buddies. Dallas is alpha dog, and so the bitches sit on either side of him, feeling safer, close to the captain (old versions suggest a sex scene of some kind, involving Dallas and Ripley (or else another female crew member?) It was never explored, but vestiges of the notion stand out in the completed film - Ripley is concerned for Dallas, much more than for others. They almost bicker like a couple at one point.

The remaining two are explained in that Kane rises first (foreshadowing), and this seating allows an easy melt to closeups of Kane, so that we understand the geometry of the chamber.

I always kinda thought that Ripley and Lambert's positions were reversed from what this picture shows. Even Veronica Cartwright seems to mistake (based on this picture) Sigourney's body for her own, in a commentary track. Similar builds. The gals had to wear nipple tape in order to preserve the R-rating, even though we barely see either of them in this sequence.

This seven-bed octagonal chamber was cutely referenced in the first AvP movie. If you want to go extra-hard, you could theorize that a WY designer managed to see photography of the site, and so "innocently" made a design choice to make a chamber look like it.

Now look, I understand about this Bonus Situation. I get that, it's #1.

But if we're gonna talk about this bonus situatoin then we need to understand that this is a commercial vehicle. It is not in our contract to do no rescue mission, so we have to let them know that, and THEN get back on this Bonus Situation.

And see, what I think they should do is, they should just freeze him.

The thing I'm puzzled by, is after Alien and Aliens, why does Weyland Yutani still want the Aliens. They're clearly uncontrollable. They'd make bad bioweapons. Also, what wars are going on that justify & pay for weapons of that caliber, instead of just dropping some marines on whatever planetary insurgency is going on?

It's called Muh Internal Universe Logic. Particularly useful in the DETAILS of a sci-fi story, a somewhat plausible premise or story element animates the possibility of the story itself, but is not given any rigorous scientific explanation itself. If the audience is willing to suspend disbelief and continue to go along with the story, it's a good logic. If the audience calls bullshit and is unwilling to suspend disbelief, then it's a bad logic.

Examples of where Muh Internal Universe Logic has succeeded:

-you can capture ghosts using high-tech, high-energy equipment, and keep them in a storage facility.
-If you die in the hyper-realistic computer simulation, then you die in real life too.
-The Big Bad Evil Company Is the Root Of All Evil.
-inorganic robots and organic humans can both teleport backwards in time, but they both have to be naked to start with. :^)

The below is an example of Muh Internal Universe Logic which I personally find to be absolutely idiotic and repugnant /as executed in one movie, but not in others/. Because in the movie I'm thinking of (which much of /tv/ likes), /the soldiers already know perfectly well what they're up against/. And yet...

-for some reason, it is necessary for starship troopers to go into hand-to-hand-tier/melee combat with HUGE INSECTOID MONSTERS WHICH ARE WAY WAY BIGGER THAN THEY ARE, rather than simply nuking the sites from orbit. My god I hate this fucking movie and I automatically think less of anyone who likes it. I've seen about 90% of it, just once, but even I had to walk away in disbelief for about 10 minutes at the end, coming back just in time for the fucking stupid It's Afraid. I even get that it's supposed to work on some camp level, but that's just it. /I Don't Care./ For me, the whole thing is stupid and makes no sense. In this case, I REJECT the internal logic of the story, whereas I'm happy to play along with the above.

>cin: So where did the idea of the bonus situation come from?
>>Scott: This was something I added to the script because of my initial troubles trying to get the budget approved, and as soon as I mentioned the bonus situation, I got exactly what I asked for...well, almost.
>cin: You introduce the bonus situation early in the film, but then...
>>Scott: Right, I did that intentionally to capture the attention of the audience. I'd already shown them the Nostromo, and the crew, but I needed something to really make sure I had the audience with me, and then it hit me: the bonus situation. Who isn't intrigued by the bonus situation? How does it work? Who's in charge of it? You know who isn't intrigued by the bonus situation? Nobody, that's who.
>cin: No doubt, you had my attention right off the bat....it was like, wow, big ship, cool....nice space shots....the crew seems alright...whoa...wait a minute...hold on, go back, what's this about a bonus situation!?
>>Scott: (laughs) I still get asked about the bonus situation I'd say, oh, about monthly. It had a greater impact than I thought.

One of the things the Alien novels (and comic books) did right was really flesh out the worldbuilding and provide plausible reasons why the aliens were valuable lifeforms. They harvest royal jelly from the colonies and in several cases end up treating them like exotic dangerous animals more than "THE ULTIMATE BIOWEAPON"

The biggest flaw Ridley made with Alien is that he never resolved the bonus situation.

The movie starts, and in one of the very first scenes, we hear about issues with the bonus situation, so you know it must have been important. It had me curious right off the bat, and scene after scene came, but they never discussed the bonus situation. I figured that when Kane was in his coma, Scott would have taken that opportunity to finally discuss the bonus situation, but the next thing you know, we get the chestburster scene, and the alien arrives, which was cool and all, but I couldn't help thinking to myself "what about the g'damn bonus situation!?".

Then, one by one, the alien starts killing the crew, and it was at this point that I figured Scott wasn't even going to address the bonus situation, which was fucked up, but I held out and figured that Ridley wouldn't let such an obviously important plot device go unresolved. But no. He did.

When we finally lose Parker and Lambert, I knew we'd never have the answer. The ending was cool with the "lucky star" shit and the ejection from the shuttle, but all I could think about was how I would be left forever wondering about the bonus situation, and why it never got resolved.

I hate Ridley Scott for that to this day.

It's more like Ash doesn't really fit on the spectrum at all. He's science officer, so anything science-related he immediately outranks everyone. But if it's not directly science related he is outranked by everyone, which is why Ripley reams him for breaking quarantine.

I think a better way would be to think of Ash as an advisory position outside of the traditional hierarchy that the rest of the crew reside in

Sometimes suspension of disbelief is purely personal and the filmmaker just has to hope that enough people are willing to for a particular plot element.

For Starship Troopers I can suspend it because I get that, thematically, the entire movie is a tongue-in-cheek satire of propaganda and war movies where the audience is supposed to root for giant unwieldy war machines that sacrifice life for no good goddamn reason just because the narrative says so. If this weren't the case, then I'd be right where you are because even the worst military would be like "This is fucking dumb. Let's drop some nukes on most of them then go in and find the brain bug when there's not an army of giant bugs in the way." Even the novel has the humans using mechs.

The way I figure it, receiving new orders from the Company prior the Nostromo finished its mining mission, a signal coming from LV426 has set series of austerity measures to the Bonus Situation.

The terms of the Bonus Situation, include commitments by Weylend-Yutani to put in place budget cuts and overhauls. Mother AI also expanded and revised those measures which covered several of the changes alarming Parker. The revisions included raising the hours, cutting pensions, liberalizing the energy market, opening up third party professions, expanding a property tax that Parker already revile, and pushing forward a stalled program to privatize the Company's assets.

See now THIS is an accurate representation of the Bonus Situation, because Parker ranks Brett, yet Jonsey ranks the both of them because he lived.

See, this is the Straight Story, and Harry is helping to Repo-Man some of that Bonus Situation. That is an excellent graph. And Parker has decided that The Bonus should no longer be Alien to the maintenance crew, who perform a valuable function on the ship (which is not a rescue ship, w-we don't do that type of duty!) All they're doin' is Jonesin' for what's theirs, don't leave them out to dry-dock. NOSTROMO LOCAL 1809246(09)

WE FIGHT FOR FAIR ADJUSTED DOLLARS, FAIR LABOR PRACTICES (WHICH DO NOT INCLUDE NO RESCUE MISSION), AND A FAIR BONUS SITUATION. NO CREWS ARE EXPENDABLE!!!

although, now that I actually look at the image, the ending credits-pap is clearly not from Alien itself. I won't bother about it just now but it should be easy to determin what movie those "credits" come from.

Jonesy deserved his larger share of the bonus due to the fact that he was indestructible, as demonstrated by the Xenos reluctance to attack him.

Think nearly every shot was done in camera. This means the flaws of Blue Screen aren't there. Also the fact that they used airfix models to make the Nostromo helps give it a lot of detail.
