This is what I don't get. There are only two stories to tell from this event and neither one of them are meant for a movie. An interesting documentary, yes, but not a movie. You either show Britain like, "Holy shit we just got BTFO we gotta go!" or you show, "Holy shit Hitler just totally fucked up like how did he fuck up like that?!"

This story just doesn't make sense as a movie.

>Due to the distance and over the wind, it was hard to make out what was being said but it was clear that director Christopher Nolan was shouting, running and waving his arms a lot. Indeed, combined with the brown trenchcoat, from our perspective it almost looked like the director was acting in the film himself. At one hilarious point we noted him pointing at one of the various cutouts and then shouting at singer-turned-actor Harry Styles before pointing back towards the cutout and shouting again

Will this be the biggest yet?

I actually think this film will literally be Britain just running away from Nazis
I say this because Nolan is outspoken in how he feels the UK fucked him over by not funding his early films. He's also very conservative and moved to America

I don't expect a good portrayal of Britain

At least that would be historically accurate to us both. Can't ever wrap my head around how some Americans will perceive us as cowards when the Brits were even more unabashed in how frightened they were when escaping off the mainland.

But whatevs.

And to answer your confusion for why Hitler maintained some reluctance not to send Rommel to Dunkirk and wipe out the french garrisons protecting the british escape, that's because he still clutched some hope even in those days that Britain might ally with him. Crazy kraut thought that those celtic+angle fuckers considered themselves "Germanic" and that they'd he swayed to his side.

I don't get why Hitler even showed any mercy to the brits, should have slaughtered them all instead of holding back and letting them escape.

The worst part is that the brits have somehow had to do mental gymnastics to convince themselves it was intentional on the part of the Nazi to allow them to escape, and that the brits somehow achieved a "victory" in being shown mercy by a superior and more noble adversary.
